  • In Health with Dr. Brian: What’s Your Excuse for not Exercising?
I don’t have time. That’s the number one reason people use for not exercising. I have some questions: How much time do you watch TV? How much time do you spend cooking meals? How much time do you spend scrolling the internet on your phone? How much time do you spend aimlessly walking around Target, Marshall’s or the mall wondering if you’re going to buy something? If you’re one of the many that says you don’t have time to exercise, I have a bit of homework for you that I really hope you’ll do. All it requires is a small…

  • Mr. Penny Pincher
Things that would have been taboo in our society 10-15 years ago are now readily accepted. As we look back through history, this isn’t a new concept. A woman wearing a bikini (or something similar) on the beach in 1930s America would’ve been shunned, perhaps even arrested. This is obviously perfectly acceptable nowadays, to the point where bikinis are covering less and less each year.  Depending on what you’re discussing, progress can be very positive. Removing bias, speaking truth and providing access to wealth for all would be noble examples. There are other social norms however that, once let out…
  • Unearth the Sound: Experience the Powerful Chorus of Cicadas!
Cicadas are renowned for their distinctive and overwhelming noise, a natural symphony that marks the arrival of summer in many parts of the world. These insects, emerging after years underground, create their loud, reverberating song through a process called stridulation, where they rapidly contract their tymbals (drum-like organs). The sound can reach up to 100 decibels, echoing through forests and neighborhoods. This cacophony not only defines the soundscape of their habitat but also plays a crucial role in mating rituals and predator deterrence. The captivating video capturing these sounds was taken at the Anne Close Springs Greenway. For more information…

  • In Health with Dr. Brian: I’m Older. I’m Healthier. I’m in Better Shape. Why?
Why am I in better shape at 45 than I was at 25? It’s not the kettle bell in my garage. It’s not the program in my notebook. It’s not the motivation in my head. It’s not the supplements on my counter. It’s not the equipment in my gym. It’s the people I have in my life. What gets me great fitness results? It’s not my hardcore attitude or my genetics or my extreme passion for exercise. • The Great Cicada Emergence of 2024: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event in South Carolina
This year, South Carolina is poised to witness a remarkable natural spectacle – the simultaneous emergence of Brood XIX, the 13-year cicadas, and Brood XIII, the 17-year cicadas. While York County, a more urban region in the state, will experience a smaller cicada population compared to rural areas, residents can still expect to see and hear some of these fascinating insects. Typically, South Carolina’s cicada populations are much lower than the overwhelming numbers expected in the northern and western parts of the state this year. These periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground before emerging en masse for a…
  • South Carolina Senate Passes $15.8 Billion Budget with Focus on Education, Infrastructure, and Law Enforcement
By Senator Michael Johnson As I am typing these words I have just cast my vote on the state budget. The budget debate began on Tuesday and lasted about six hours. We spent just over twelve hours today debating the $15.8 billion budget. My goal for this budget was to put as much of our resources as possible into education, infrastructure, and law enforcement. While we didn’t accomplish everything that I had hoped for, we made significant strides. This year’s budget has an emphasis on education. The Senate’s budget puts more funding towards public education than at any time in…

There appears to be a movement that’s on the rise in America. It’s something that used to be commonplace but fell by the wayside with the advent of cheap goods and labor. With inflation still rearing its ugly head in our post Covid world, more of us are taking advantage of a tried and true method to get things done.  Asking our friends and neighbors for help.  I’m sure you’ve seen the videos of people in the Amish community raising a barn in a day. • National Pretzel Day: A Twisted Treat with Deep Roots
Get ready to raise a soft pretzel (or two!) this Friday, April 26th, for National Pretzel Day! This isn’t just another quirky food holiday. National Pretzel Day has a rich history, dating back to 2003 when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell officially recognized the pretzel’s importance to the state. The pretzel’s journey goes back even further, possibly originating in the 7th century. While some speculate it arrived in America on the Mayflower, it’s confirmed that German settlers brought pretzels to Pennsylvania around 1710. The Catholic Church played a key role in the pretzel’s early story. During Lent, strict fasting rules prohibited…

On a trip to New York to visit his Mom, he woke up one morning and started writing.  As if writing a book wasn’t impressive enough, John had to find time to put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) in between his busy day job. What may not be as well known or accepted is the idea of applying a diet when it comes to your money. As much as attempting to eat less can be good for your health, applying similar strategies to your wallet can also prove to be beneficial.  Just…

  • Girls Need Role Models Too!!
By Josie Duda, reposted from South Carolina Women in Leadership Last year, I went to Winthrop University to hear a S.C. Supreme Court case. The first thing I noticed when I saw the judges was that there were no women! This made me sad because I always thought it’d be a fun job to be a lawyer or judge. I felt pushed down that the judges and lawyers arguing the case were only men. I went home and researched it. I found that in all the 233 years of the S.C. Supreme Court, only two women have ever been on it. More…

Everyone loves a deal. Even the richest among us like to save a buck or two. There’s a euphoria to the whole process. It’s almost as though you’re getting away with something without actually stealing or breaking any laws. Simply put, it feels good.  But how do we know we’re getting the best deal?  This is harder to quantify when you’re talking about non-perishable goods like appliances and cars or service based items such as the building of a deck or pool. Many of us rely on our neighbors to provide a recommendation. This is a tried and true method…

You’re frugal because you ate dinner at home instead of going out or you wore a pair of shoes down to the sole. Either of these would save you money and be considered ways that you can be frugal. Although I agree with the idea of being frugal as it relates to money, there’s one concept of frugality that many of us throw away on a daily basis.  The concept of frugality as it relates to time.  Last year, my wife and I made…

Some of the cheapest beers may be non-offensive to your palate due to a general lack of taste while more expensive brands may taste “skunky” or old (I’m looking at you Heineken).  In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, we’re going to do a deep dive into beer. However, we can’t very well discuss expensive beers, that would go against the entire “Penny Pincher” ethos. No, we’re going to whittle down the best cheap beers you can buy. We’ll use a 3 part weighted scoring average:  Price: 50 points Taste:…

  • Mr. Penny Pincher
Luxury is defined as “the state of great comfort and extravagant living.” By all accounts, most Americans are living in luxury compared to our forefathers (and foremothers). Dishwashers, microwaves and washer/dryers have made our lives simpler and much easier than our ancestors. The fact that this is taken for granted is a shame.  If you watch any history documentary on how clothes were washed 100+ years ago, you’ll see it was a multi-day process. You’d have to lug the clothes down to a body of water, wash them (which took hours to do) and then hang dry them (which may…

  • The Time for Judicial Reform is Now
By Senator Michael Johnson It is basic Civics 101. The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches are separate, but equal, branches of government – with checks and balances to keep each from having too much power. The problemarises when one of the branches of government is able to manipulate and intimidate another branch, which is exactly what is happening now in South Carolina. For the past year numerous articles have been written in papers all across our state detailing the abuses of certain members of the legislature. You may have read about a convicted killer being released from prison 16 years before the end of his term (he was later returned to prison) due to a legislator. The good news is that there are very few bad…
