The original ban stemmed from mid-century concerns over truancy and underground gambling, back when spectators frequently placed bets on game outcomes and business owners handed out prizes to winners. While no minor was…

At the time, I was married to my now ex wife and we were going through the process of adoption. We had been attempting to get pregnant for over a year and…

Personally, I think channels like Dateline and other shows about crime exist to do one thing: they make us feel better about ourselves. Think…

District leaders say the budget reflects a balanced approach that prioritizes investing in the students of YSD1 and the people who serve those students every day. “Our employees…
As summer temperatures rise across South Carolina, maintaining a beautiful lawn becomes a battle against the scorching sun. For those of you looking to keep your grass healthy while avoiding heat exhaustion, timing is everything. While it might be tempting to fire up the mower at the very first sign of daylight or wait until the evening breeze kicks in, turf experts say there is a definitive right and wrong time to cut your grass during a Southern summer. The Golden Window: Mid-Morning (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM) If you want the absolute best results for both your grass and…
A 63 year old Indian Land woman died Wednesday evening after she was struck by her own vehicle in an apartment parking lot near the South Carolina and North Carolina state line, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said. The crash happened the evening of June 10 in the parking lot of the Madison Ridge Apartments, just off Highway 160 in Indian Land. The coroner’s office identified the woman as Margaret McWeeney of Indian Land. The death is the latest reminder of how quickly a routine moment in a familiar parking lot can turn fatal in a fast growing corner of…
A Rock Hill man who holds legal permanent resident status has been indicted by a federal grand jury on a single charge of voting illegally as a noncitizen in the 2024 election, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina announced Wednesday. Ekam Monfum, 38, faces one count of illegally voting as an alien. The U.S. Attorney’s Office presented the indictment, which was returned in Columbia. The case draws national questions about voter eligibility down to York County, where Monfum lives. South Carolina law and federal law both require that only U.S. citizens cast ballots in federal elections,…

York and Lancaster County voters will decide a dozen South Carolina House contests in the November general election, a fuller slate than the two counties usually see, with Democrats challenging Republican incumbents in nearly every district. The lone exception is District 49, where Rock Hill Democrat John R. King, the incumbent, drew no Republican opponent and is positioned to keep his seat. Everywhere else across the two counties, the fall ballot pits a sitting Republican against a Democratic challenger, and in one York County district a third party candidate as well. The seats determine who represents the area in the…
Three Republican incumbents won contested primaries Tuesday for South Carolina House seats that take in Lancaster County, and each will face a Democratic challenger in the fall as the county’s General Assembly districts head toward a full slate of November contests. The races carry weight for one of the fastest growing parts of the state, including the Lancaster County panhandle and Indian Land, where representation in the General Assembly shapes how the county handles roads, schools and rapid residential growth. The seats span multiple counties, but all four districts on the county’s fall ballot, Districts 44, 45, 53 and 65,…
South Carolina’s open race for governor and two other statewide Republican primaries are headed to June 23 runoffs after no candidate captured a majority Tuesday, while the contest with the most direct bearing on York and Lancaster Counties took shape in the open race for Congress. In the 5th Congressional District, which covers York and Lancaster Counties, Democrat Mallory Dittmer won her primary and will face Republican Wes Climer in November for the seat being vacated by U.S. Rep. Ralph Norman. Norman, the Rock Hill Republican who has held the seat, ran for governor instead of seeking reelection and finished…
York County voters settled a slate of local and legislative primary contests Tuesday, choosing a new probate judge nominee, two County Council nominees and three South Carolina House nominees with all precincts reporting in the June 9 primary. The outcomes matter because they narrow the field for the November general election in races that touch county government, the local court that handles estates and marriage licenses, and three seats in the General Assembly. Every winner cleared a majority of the vote, so none of these contests advances to a June 23 runoff. In four of the six races, Tuesday’s result…
Federal investigators are issuing a stark warning to South Carolina parents about a growing online threat tied to an extremist group known as 764. Officials emphasize that the danger does not stem from video games themselves, but rather from predatory individuals using gaming platforms to target vulnerable children. According to the FBI field office in Columbia, criminal rings linked to nihilistic violent extremism are seeking out children in gaming chats, social media, and private online spaces. What begins as a seemingly normal online friendship often transitions to private messaging apps. Once there, children face intense pressure, threats, or blackmail. The…

The Rock Hill City Council approved the sale of about 25 acres at Palmetto Research Park to Novant Health on Monday, clearing the way for a medical campus the city estimates will draw more than $300 million in investment and create 255 full time jobs. The decision repurposes one of York County’s most closely watched parcels, a high profile tract that has sat largely empty since plans for a Carolina Panthers training facility and headquarters collapsed. For Rock Hill and the surrounding communities, the deal promises expanded access to medical care and a major employer on land the city has…

Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a new state law that will strip autoplay videos, infinite scrolling, push notifications and like counts from the social media accounts of South Carolina users younger than 16. The measure was championed by state Rep. Brandon Guffey, a York County Republican whose teenage son died by suicide after an online sextortion scam. The law, called the Stop Harm from Addictive Social Media Act, aims to protect the mental health of children by cutting off design features the state considers addictive and by giving parents more control over how their children use major platforms. For families…

COLUMBIA, S.C. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has charged a Blythewood man with threatening the life of a public official, accusing him of mailing letters that referenced a silencer, the official’s workplace and where the official’s children attend school. Dewayne Simmons, 57, was charged Thursday, June 4, with threatening the life, person or family of a public official, SLED announced Friday. He was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County. State law treats such threats as a felony when they are tied to an official’s public duties. SLED has brought similar charges in several South…

Charlotte Water’s plan to nearly double the water it permanently moves out of the Catawba River is facing organized opposition from South Carolina, including the Rock Hill based regional agency that represents York County, and under a North Carolina law the request cannot even be approved before 2027. The Catawba is the primary drinking water source for much of this region, including Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Rock Hill, all of which draw from Lake Wylie or the wider river system. How much water leaves the river for good is not an abstract question here. It affects how much remains…

In many ways, sports are like life. Each game or season brings its share of triumphs and, in the case of really terrible teams, a long string of defeats and misery. It’s probably why so many of us love watching sports. The competition is exciting but we’re also able to identify with the effort and sacrifices made by individual athletes and teams in order to achieve their goals. My father lived his entire life having never seen the Boston Red Sox or Chicago Cubs win a World Series. He didn’t necessarily like either team but he loved baseball. As a…

Attorney General Alan Wilson announced the conclusion of South Carolina’s legal challenge against a Biden-era Title IX regulation following a separate court decision that struck down the rule nationwide. The contested federal rule would have mandated that schools permit students to utilize restroom facilities based on their gender identity rather than their biological sex. Additionally, the policy would have allowed disciplinary actions against students who voiced opposition to gender identity ideologies in school settings. South Carolina had previously joined a coalition of multiple states and independent organizations to file a lawsuit, which successfully blocked the mandate from taking effect within…

The Fort Mill School District initially utilized those figures to build its formal budget recommendation during a regularly scheduled board meeting that same evening. However, on Thursday, May 21, state education officials notified districts that the original projections contained significant calculation…

A 66-year-old York County resident has pleaded guilty in federal court to straw purchasing firearms as part of an interstate gun trafficking ring. An investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Baltimore Field Office revealed that Gregory Tischuk, a resident of Fort Mill, was trafficking firearms to Baltimore, Maryland, through an illicit gun dealer operating out of Charlotte, North Carolina. Because the Charlotte-based trafficker could not legally possess firearms, he relied on Tischuk to acquire them. An undercover ATF agent infiltrated the operation, purchasing approximately 106 firearms across Maryland and the Carolinas. Ballistics and serial…

The contest to succeed Gov. Henry McMaster, who is term limited and cannot seek a third consecutive term, sits at the…
A Subway on Highway 9 Bypass in Lancaster dropped to a C grade in May 2026, the lowest mark issued among more than 70 food inspections across Lancaster County during the month. Three other establishments received a B before correcting the problems. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture, which oversees retail food safety in the state, grades establishments after each inspection and posts the reports as public record. A C is the lowest letter grade the agency assigns, and it usually signals that violations from an earlier visit were not fixed. Most Lancaster County establishments inspected in May held an…
More than 250 restaurant and retail food inspections across York County in May 2026 ended with A grades for nearly every establishment, but three operations drew a B from state inspectors before returning to an A within weeks. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture, which oversees retail food safety in the state, grades establishments after each inspection and posts the results as public record. Three sites fell short during the month: Konnichiwa of Fort Mill, the Subway inside the Walmart in Tega Cay, and a QuikTrip on Riverview Road in Rock Hill. I’m often stunned at the level of luxury and convenience in our everyday lives. Although prices for just about everything have skyrocketed the past 5-10 years, the fact that we can purchase a ready-made meal in ten minutes for less than twenty dollars would shock and amaze our ancestors one generation removed. And yet, most of us go about our lives with zero awareness of how good we have it. Table salt is a great example. For centuries, salt was considered an exotic item available only to the rich. It’s hard to believe now but salt was once on par…

The Homebuyer Bond Program provides eligible buyers with affordable, fixed-rate mortgage loans alongside forgivable down payment assistance to offset closing costs. The new adjustments will raise household income limits from last year’s range of $90,000–$157,000 up to a new bracket of $95,000–$164,000, varying by…
ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA – Winthrop University alumnus James Kevin Gray ’99 received news this month that he had been waiting on for years. The move marks a new phase in the state’s review of…
On May 29, 1780, in the rolling farmland of what is now eastern Lancaster County, a short and brutal clash between Continental soldiers and British led cavalry left more than a hundred Americans dead and gave the Revolution one of its most enduring rallying cries. Friday marks the 246th anniversary of the Battle of Waxhaws, remembered by many simply as Buford’s Massacre. For readers in Tega Cay and Fort Mill, the battlefield is closer than many realize. The Buford Memorial site sits about nine miles east of the city of Lancaster on South Carolina Highway 522, roughly ten miles south…

It often surprises people to see a chiropractor treating babies or young children. I sometimes get a curious look and the question, “You actually treat children?” It’s an understandable reaction – many people don’t realize that chiropractic care is gentle, safe, and beneficial for kids, even infants. Why Children Might Need Chiropractic Care While children don’t typically suffer from the same wear and tear as adults, they experience their own set of physical stresses – beginning with birth. The birthing process, even when everything goes smoothly, can place significant pressure on a newborn’s head, neck, and spine. In some cases,…

It’s important to have this context because although I have a good understanding of world history and our place within it, my opinion of countries not called the United States is mostly limited to books, movies and daily news….

Senator Graham’s legislation seeks to close this gap by extending these domestic sourcing requirements to the Coast Guard. The move ensures that no branch of the military relies on foreign nations for essential personal equipment. Supporters of the bill argue that an over-reliance…
