A 6 year old buff tabby named Kierstin and a 4 1/2 year old dog named Gigi are the Humane Society of York County’s pets of the week, and both came to the Fort Mill shelter as owner surrenders through no fault of their own.
The two are available now at a time when the shelter says it is working through an over capacity problem, a stretch when adoptions and foster placements matter most to the organization at 8177 Regent Parkway.
Kierstin waits in the big cat room
Kierstin is described by shelter volunteers as sweet, sassy, friendly, playful and affectionate. She is estimated to be just over 6 years old. She is spayed, vaccinated, tested and microchipped.
She can be found in the big cat room at the rescue. Volunteers ask that visitors give her the time she needs to warm up on her own terms.
Gigi cleared for adoption after heartworm treatment
Gigi arrived after her owner was no longer able to afford her care. She tested positive for heartworm, and the Humane Society treated her. She has since been cleared and is ready to be adopted.
Her foster family calls her “utterly delightful.” Gigi weighs between 35 and 40 pounds, which the shelter places on the small side of medium. According to her foster home, she is a cuddler, walks well on a leash, takes treats gently and will settle in quietly for hours. She has not yet been tested with other dogs.
Gigi is spayed, vaccinated, tested and microchipped.
437 adoptions so far this year
The Humane Society has placed 104 dogs and 333 cats into adoptive homes so far in 2026, a total of 437 animals.
Along with adoption, the organization is asking the community for volunteers at both the rescue and its thrift shop, foster homes, supply and fund drives, donations, and shoppers at its Pawsibilities thrift store and its eBay listings. A pop up holiday store is planned. Information on planned giving through the Paw Prints Legacy Society is available on the shelter’s website.
