Following the Winthrop Byrnes Auditorium’s reopening last spring, the Rock Hill Symphony announces plans for five concerts over the next school year.
Spearheaded by musical director and conductor Christopher James Lees, the 65-member orchestra plans to collaborate with Winthrop’s Department of Music throughout its performances, said Lorrie Crochet, the chair of the department.
Lees will hold a master class each semester for the music department, allowing students to attend rehearsals and learn performance firsthand, the university said in a press release.
“This will impact students on a fundamental level,” Lees said. “Each instrument may speak to students on an individual basis, so when they go to middle school, they can try to play that instrument.”
The symphony’s planned performances each have different themes and take place from September 2026 to May 2027.
Sept. 26, 2026 at 7:30 p.m.: “Variations on America.”
The show will feature special guest Byron James, the principal horn player of the Charlotte Symphony. Provost Sebastian van Delden will provide patriotic readings amid intermissions.
Oct. 25, 2026 at 4 p.m.: “America’s Birthday Party.”
A free, family-oriented concert that evolves colonial melodies into new American music.
Dec. 13, 2026, at 4 p.m.: “Magic of Christmas.”
A mix of carols, commercial songs, and audience sing-a-longs for the Christmas season.
Jan. 30, 2027, at 7:30 p.m.: “Charleston & Beethoven.”
A celebration of Beethoven on the 100th anniversary of his death. Charleston-based composer Edward Hart and violinist Yuriy Bekker will perform a violin concerto honoring South Carolina’s natural beauty.
May 2, 2027 at 4 p.m.: “Pop Songs Through the Ages.”
Melodies of timeless songs woven together for a musical journey.
