The Yips and Sips Golf League will hold its first Boston butt barbecue drive to benefit Emily’s Dream on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Tega Cay Pro Shop.
Pickup runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the side of the pro shop at 15083 Molokai Drive. Boston butts cost $50 each and must be reserved in advance. Organizers say a few extra butts will be on the grill the day of the event for anyone who did not order ahead.
Proceeds support Emily’s Dream, a charitable effort tied to the memory of Emily Elkins, a Rock Hill teenager who wanted to open a homeless shelter in her city before she died of cancer.
Homemade barbecue sauce will be sold at pickup in three styles, mustard base, vinegar base, and Carolina red, at $5 per pint. Payment for sauce is cash only.
Who Emily was
Elkins donated thousands of dollars worth of clothes and supplies to homeless residents in Rock Hill and York County and had begun planning a shelter of her own, according to earlier reporting by WSOC and the Rock Hill Herald. Cancer took her life in March 2015 when she was 16.
Volunteers carried the plan forward. Emily’s House, a shelter in her honor, opened in August 2016 at 314 Hasty Street in Rock Hill. The Rev. Jonathan Pannell, pastor at Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, and his family donated the house so the project could move ahead. Emily’s father, Paul Elkins, told the Herald at the time that his daughter had given throughout her life and would keep giving after it.

Orders should be placed ahead of the Saturday, Sept. 26, pickup at the Tega Cay Pro Shop, which runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
