U.S. Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., is calling on all candidates seeking South Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat to participate in a televised debate ahead of next month’s Republican special primary.
Fry announced Tuesday that he believes voters should have the opportunity to hear directly from the candidates before casting their ballots.
Per a press release:
“This U.S. Senate race matters too much for voters to only hear from candidates through ads and press releases,” Fry said. “They deserve to hear directly from the people asking for their vote. I’m calling on all candidates to commit to a televised debate before South Carolinians head to the ballot box.”
According to Fry’s campaign, it is prepared to work with television stations and fellow candidates to identify a debate format and schedule that accommodates all participants before the election.
The special Republican primary is scheduled for Aug. 11 following the death of longtime U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham earlier this month. The winner will advance to the Nov. 3 general election to fill the remainder of Graham’s term.
Fry is among several Republicans seeking the nomination in what has become one of South Carolina’s highest-profile races. His campaign said a televised debate would provide voters with an opportunity to compare candidates’ positions on key issues before heading to the polls.
