Ten golfers from York and Lancaster counties played in the 95th South Carolina Amateur Championship at the Quixote Club in Sumter, with Indian Land’s Mason Kucia turning in the best area result at a tie for 21st.
The championship ran July 23 to 26 over 72 holes of stroke play and drew many of the state’s top amateurs. Austin Langdale of Easley won the title at 8 under par, carding rounds of 70, 66, 65 and 71 for a 272 total and a $1,000 payout. Sam Jackson of West Columbia, the defending champion, finished second at 6 under.
How the local golfers fared
Kucia posted 71, 70, 71 and 75 for a 287 total, 7 over par. He was the only area player to earn a check, taking $70, and one of six golfers from the two counties to survive the cut, which came after 36 holes and fell at 148. The low area score of the week was a 69, matched by Banks Steele, James Lightsey and Carter Smith. Steele reached the number twice, in the second and fourth rounds.
