South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver issued a joint warning to school districts statewide, highlighting pressing threats to student safety as the new academic year begins.
The joint letter draws attention to online risks, particularly digital platforms used by predators to exploit children. Officials specifically raised alarms over the rise of artificial intelligence used to generate child sexual abuse material, as well as the ongoing danger of counterfeit prescription pills containing lethal illicit substances.
State leaders emphasized that academic progress depends heavily on establishing secure school environments. In response to growing digital threats, the Attorney General’s Office has backed recent state legislation aimed at criminalizing AI-generated child exploitation material and granting law enforcement stronger tools to prosecute offenders.
The warning builds on multi-year state investments in campus physical security, including expanded funding for school resource officers and enhanced coordination between local school districts, law enforcement agencies, and state officials. Both agencies reiterated their shared commitment to working alongside educators and families to keep South Carolina students safe throughout the school year.
