If you’re one of the over 577,000 Charlotte commuters averaging 28 minutes each way, you know Queen City traffic is tough. Charlotte recently ranked No. 2 on Forbes’ list of the worst commutes in the country, just behind Nashville. Heavy congestion clogs major routes like I-85, I-77, and I-485, adding stress to daily routines. Forbes attributed Nashville’s top ranking to rapid population growth—something Charlotte is experiencing as well. Aggressive drivers, frequent slowdowns, and risky road conditions only add to the challenges. North Carolina roads are a factor, with almost one-third rated in poor or mediocre condition by a National Transportation…

Recent tragedies and legal disputes in York County highlight critical issues surrounding the authority and safety of school crossing guards in managing traffic. The role of crossing guards is bound by state laws that limit their ability to direct or control traffic on busy public roads. The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office has also weighed in on this matter, clarifying that crossing guards are authorized only to stop vehicles temporarily to help students cross the street, not to manage broader traffic congestion. This limitation is designed to ensure that only certified law enforcement officials handle traffic direction, which is crucial…
There are a handful of exercises that people will argue are “the best”. I’m not going to bore you with that right now. Recently I read an article listing the best exercises you should be doing, and surprisingly, how to do a squat; was not on this list. Such a list made me remember some of the conversations I’ve had with people (CrossFit members, general public, medical doctors, physical therapist, etc) on why the advice they’ve given, or received that they shouldn’t squat anymore is in poor judgement. First, there are many variations (back squat, front squat, overhead squat, goblet…

As a result, the Hunter’s Moon will appear significantly larger…

We didn’t all band together and collectively provide input on what we wanted to achieve. There was a sense of pride and dedication to the goals set forth by the leadership in charge. We all understood…

A series of significant updates to SSI, announced by the Social Security Administration (SSA), aims to ease financial burdens for many recipients. SSI provides essential monthly payments to those over 65 with limited financial resources, as well as to adults and children with severe disabilities. The payments are used to cover basic needs such as medication, food, and rent. Eligibility for SSI is income-dependent, with strict guidelines that have long been a barrier for many potential beneficiaries. However, in a…

My car had a part that needed to be replaced. The mechanic quoted me $1200 to do it. The part itself costs $270. So potentially I could save over $900 if I did the job myself. But in reality I know that’s not true. The truth is, that $900 would be quickly eaten up by: Time researching YouTube videos on how to do the job Purchasing the tools to do the task More time actually completing the job Frustration when I screw up 5 times trying to do the job More money likely fixing something I broke How do I…
FORT MILL, S.C. — Due to ongoing repairs from a significant water main break, approximately half of the schools and district facilities in Fort Mill may experience disruptions in water service. As a precaution, all schools and district facilities will be closed on Tuesday, October 8. The unexpected nature of this disruption has led to the decision not to transition to eLearning for the day. District officials cited the proximity to the upcoming scheduled holiday and teacher workday as a factor in determining the course of action. Instead, a make-up day will be scheduled in the early part of next…

Daylight saving time will officially come to an end for 2024 on Sunday, November 3. At 2 a.m., clocks will “fall back” one hour, giving most people an extra hour of sleep. The shift brings earlier sunrises, but also earlier sunsets, with nightfall arriving before 7 p.m. The clocks won’t “spring forward” again until March 2025. While there have been frequent efforts in Congress to make daylight saving time permanent and stop the biannual clock changes, those proposals have yet to gain enough traction to become law. As a result, Americans will continue the long-standing practice of adjusting their clocks…
This gorgeous girl is Allison! Allison came to the HSYC as a stray over 8 months ago. Being an adult tabby in a rescue is rough since all the kitties take the attention away from the amazing adults. Allison is a gorgeous soul and would like to be your one and only feline family. We estimate Allison’s age to be 1 year 8 months old. She loves…

The effects of Hurricane Helene should give us all pause. Imagine sitting in your home having dinner with your family one day only to have that same home swept away in a flood the next. It’s devastating. It’s heartbreaking. It’s sobering. It also puts everything in perspective. Although I don’t have an entirely clear picture of my family history, I know enough to create a historical tapestry with the sum of all the parts. I’m a descendent of Irish and Italian immigrants, both of whom arrived to America sometime in the mid to late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both…

Buying a house has become increasingly expensive in recent years. Home prices have gone through the roof and interest rates on mortgages have increased significantly from the historic lows we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic. The average interest rate varies widely by state, too. Unfortunately the average mortgage interest rate increased in 44 of the 50 states from Q1 2024 to Q2 2024. We’ve long been told that education is key to obtaining success in life. This is very true of course. The more educated you are on a certain subject or subjects, the more doors will be opened for you to walk through. Having said that, success doesn’t always equate to something monetary. Just because you have an advanced degree in social work, that isn’t necessarily reflected in an inflated salary. Social workers don’t make a lot of money, no matter how many diplomas are hanging on the wall. Too often we hear about people saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars…

The South Carolina Attorney General’s office has concluded that there was no criminal wrongdoing in the use of $21 million in public funds for the failed Carolina Panthers headquarters project in Rock Hill. An investigation found no evidence of misappropriation or criminal intent, as first reported by WBTV. The headquarters project, which included plans for a stadium and community spaces, collapsed into bankruptcy in 2022. However, as part of the bankruptcy settlement, the…
There’s no clear agreement about how much water you should drink each day. We tell members and our patients that a goal is 50% of your body weight in ounces. So a 140 pound woman should aim for 70 ounces per day, or approximately 8 cups. That number would nudge higher in warmer temperatures and with increased activity. In regards to weight loss, many people misinterpret thirst for hunger; so at the first signs of hunger, grab a class of water and they may also help reduce mindless snacking when you’re actually thirsty, not hungry. I have put together three…

I’m a pretty stubborn person. Over the years, I’ve made decisions that have had both positive and negative results based purely on my refusal to submit to a perceived societal or government subjugation. Whether realizing it or not, you’ve probably done the same. There are certain lines that can’t be crossed, if they are, a relationship, friendship or job ends up fading into the rearview mirror. Having strong convictions and opinions on what you will or won’t tolerate isn’t necessarily a bad trait to have; however, being stubborn provides an additional hurdle that can often impede positive progress in our…
BY DAVID FERRARA/THE POST AND COURIER (Print Media Representative) COLUMBIA — The execution room was remarkable in its silence. Freddie Eugene Owens gave no official last words as the state of South Carolina injected fatal drugs into his veins — the state’s first execution in 13 years. But, with no family present in his last moments of life, he did turn his head toward his attorney, Emily Paavola. “Bye,” Owens appeared to mouth. At 6:55 p.m. Sept. 20, Owens died at age 46 — essentially a lifetime from a night that at age 19 would seal his fate. His passing came 19…
