Perez Hat Trick Leads Winthrop Men’s Soccer Past Presbyterian

Winthrop men’s soccer erupted for four second-half goals, including a hat trick by Jorge Perez, to defeat Presbyterian College 4-0 Friday night at Eagle Field in Big South Conference action.

The Eagles entered halftime tied 0-0 despite creating several scoring opportunities. Winthrop finished the night with an 18-5 advantage in shots and held a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.

Freshman Evan Tubiolo broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, scoring his first collegiate goal after a corner kick created a scramble in front of the Presbyterian goal.

Perez then took over. He doubled Winthrop’s lead in the 63rd minute after Alfie Humphrey found him in front of the goal. Perez added another goal in the 73rd minute on a pass from Juma Baden before completing the hat trick three minutes later, again with Baden providing the assist.

The hat trick was the first by a Winthrop player since Jordan Walshaw accomplished the feat against USC Upstate in 2019. Perez also became the first Eagle since 2015 to score all three of his goals in the second half.

Baden finished with two assists and has recorded at least one point in seven of Winthrop’s 10 matches.

The Eagles improved to 5-4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Winthrop next travels to No. 20 UNC Wilmington for a nonconference match Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
