Winthrop Men’s Soccer Hosts Longwood in Big South Tournament Quarterfinal

Winthrop University men’s soccer will host Longwood on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in a Big South Conference Tournament quarterfinal matchup at Eagle Field in Rock Hill. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Eagles (6-8-3, 3-3-1 Big South) secured home-field advantage with a 2-1 victory over USC Upstate on Oct. 31. The win also clinched Winthrop’s place in the conference tournament after the team entered the match needing at least a draw to remain in contention.

Juma Baden gave the Eagles an early lead with a penalty kick before Teo Jelaca scored the game-winning goal on a free kick in the 84th minute. The victory was Winthrop’s first since a 4-0 win over Presbyterian on Oct. 2.

Fifth-seeded Longwood enters the matchup with an 8-7-1 overall record and a 3-4 conference mark. The Lancers defeated Winthrop 4-2 in their most recent meeting on Oct. 17 in Rock Hill.

Winthrop holds a 14-3-2 advantage in the all-time series. The Eagles are 7-1 in program history when hosting a Big South Tournament quarterfinal, with their only loss coming in 2024.

This marks Winthrop’s third Big South Tournament appearance in the last four seasons. The Eagles own a 29-25-8 all-time record in conference tournament play.

The winner advances to the Big South Tournament semifinals. Wednesday’s match will be streamed on ESPN+.
