Heartbreak and Grit: Fort Mill Falls Short Against Dorman in Clash of Unbeatens

Midway through the third quarter, with Dorman mounting a drive, Fort Mill’s Smith Stapleton (#90) went down and required on-field medical attention before being transported via ambulance for further evaluation.

There are nights in high school football where the scoreboard, no matter how tense or agonizing the numbers become, suddenly feels secondary.

Friday night’s marquee matchup between Fort Mill and Dorman was billed as an unblemished collision of titans — two 5-0 powerhouses entering the ring to stake their claim at the top of 5A-Region 2. But when the final whistle blew on a painful 28-24 defeat for the home team, the heaviness lingering over the stadium stemmed from far more than a single tick in the loss column.

Midway through the third quarter, with Dorman mounting a drive, the stadium fell into an eighteen-minute silence. Fort Mill’s Smith Stapleton (#90) went down and required on-field medical attention before being transported via ambulance for further evaluation. As the vehicle slowly departed the field. with Stapleton inside, players from both sidelines knelt in unity, a stark reminder of the fragile human element beneath the pads and helmets.

When play resumed, the Yellow Jackets were forced to channel their shock back into the game. Dorman immediately capitalized on the momentum of their drive, punching in a 9-yard touchdown pass to pull ahead 14-17. Minutes later, after a quick Fort Mill punt, the Cavaliers struck again with a 12-yard rushing score to push their lead to 21-17.

Yet, true to the grit that built their undefeated start, Fort Mill refused to succumb.

Dorman’s Nick Means (#1) was instrumental in mounting his teams come-from-behind victory over conference rival Fort Mill.

Late in the third quarter, the Yellow Jackets’ defense delivered a crucial spark, snagging an interception on Dorman’s 31-yard line. Quarterback Harper Love didn’t waste the opportunity, dropping back and firing a precise 23-yard touchdown strike to Kieran McCormack. Following Noah Hardy’s extra point — adding to his earlier 37-yard field goal and first-half PAT — Fort Mill reclaimed a thrilling 24-21 lead heading into the final frame.

The fourth quarter, however, belonged to Dorman’s relentless ground attack. With 10:19 remaining, Nick Means broke loose for a 17-yard touchdown run, putting the Cavaliers up 28-24.

Fort Mill launched one final, heroic drive, marching deep inside Dorman’s 20-yard line with under three minutes remaining. But on a dramatic fourth-and-short, the Cavaliers’ front line held ground, forcing a turnover on downs at their own 15-yard line to seal the hard-fought victory and preserve their undefeated season.

With the loss, Fort Mill drops to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in 5A-Region 2 play. While the defeat stings, the Yellow Jackets showed the heart of a championship contender under the heaviest of circumstances.

Fort Mill will travel to Spartanburg next Friday night seeking a crucial region rebound. But as coaches and players head home tonight, their thoughts and prayers remain squarely with Smith Stapleton.
