The high school football season enters a pivotal Week 8 highlighted by the renewal of a heated rivalry and a key matchup for the area’s lone remaining unbeaten team.
The marquee game this Friday night pits the Northwestern Trojans (7-1) against the host Rock Hill Bearcats (6-3) in their annual “City Championship” rivalry game. While Northwestern has secured the last several meetings, including a 56-14 victory in the last contest at District Three Stadium in 2023, the Bearcats are coming off an emotional region win over Nation Ford and are eager to defend their home field.
The contest also holds major Region 3 implications, as Northwestern currently holds the top spot with a perfect region record. A win would keep the powerful Trojans firmly in control of the region title race, while a Rock Hill upset would drastically tighten the standings heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
Fort Mill Schools Face Off in Must-Win Region Contest
The battle for playoff positioning in 5A-R3 intensifies Friday night as the Nation Ford Falcons (3-4) host the Catawba Ridge Copperheads (4-3) in an essential region matchup. Both teams suffered tough losses last week, with Nation Ford falling to Rock Hill and Catawba Ridge dropping its contest against undefeated Indian Land. The Falcons, currently winless in region play, need a victory to climb out of the bottom of the standings, while the Copperheads must win to stay within striking distance of the top tier of the region. The contest, held at Nation Ford High School, features two teams relying on explosive offense to secure a critical second-half-of-the-season win.
Indian Land Faces Key Test
The undefeated Indian Land Warriors (7-0), ranked among the state’s best in Class AAAAA, return home for a critical region battle against the Clover Blue Eagles (4-3). The Warriors are coming off a dominant 34-7 performance against Catawba Ridge last week, fueled by a stout defense that has allowed just 28 total points on the season.
Clover presents a physical challenge, making this a true test for Indian Land’s run toward a potential region crown. If the Warriors can maintain their perfect defensive efficiency and control the line of scrimmage, they will take a major step toward an unbeaten regular season finish.
South Pointe Travels to Lancaster
The South Pointe Stallions (6-1), fresh off a 41-0 shutout against York, travel to face the Lancaster Bruins (2-5). The Stallions are heavily favored, utilizing a balanced offense and strong defense that has them consistently ranked high in the state.
Lancaster earned a morale-boosting 20-13 victory over Dreher last week, snapping a three-game skid. For the Bruins, playing against the Class AAAA powerhouse represents an opportunity for a signature win and to demonstrate the progress made in the program’s recent victory.
