In Health with Dr. Brian: 4 High Protein Snacks for Busy Days

Between shuttling the kids to school, getting ready for work and finding time to squeeze in a workout, we all have busy schedules. I wanted to share some high-protein snacks that are both convenient and nutritious, especially for those of you “on the go.”

These snacks can be easily packed in your bag, so you can refuel no matter where you are.

Greek Yogurt

Protein Content: A typical 6 oz serving contains around 15-20 grams of protein.

Benefits: Aside from its high protein content, Greek yogurt also provides probiotics and is a good source of calcium and vitamin B-12.

Tip: Opt for plain, non-fat or low-fat varieties to minimize added sugars. If you like, you can sweeten it with honey or fresh fruits.

Almonds

Protein Content: A 1 oz serving (about 23 almonds) has approximately 6 grams of protein.

Benefits: Almonds are also a source of vitamin E, magnesium, and healthy monounsaturated fats.

Tip: Although almonds are nutritious, they are calorie-dense, so it’s important to consume them in moderation.

Jerky (Beef, Turkey or Plant-Based):

Protein Content: Roughly 9-14 grams of protein per ounce, depending on the type and brand.

Benefits: Jerky is a low-carb, high-protein snack that’s ideal for those who want something savory.

Tip: Look for versions with low sodium and without added sugars or artificial preservatives.

Hard-Boiled Eggs:

Protein Content: About 6 grams of protein per egg.

Benefits: Eggs are a complete protein source, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, B12, and choline.

Tip: Boil a batch at the start of the week and store them in the fridge. Before heading out, grab one or two, sprinkle a little salt, pepper or paprika, and you’re good to go.

When it comes to snacks, being prepared is important. This will prevent you from grabbing some chips or a candy bar when there’s nothing else around to snack on.

Remember, it’s not just about protein quantity but also the overall quality and balance of nutrients in your snack. By integrating these options into your day, you’re sure to fuel your body effectively even during the most hectic times.
