Winthrop University women’s soccer will travel to Asheville, North Carolina, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, looking for its third consecutive victory and a boost in the race for the Big South Conference Tournament.
The Eagles (5-9-1, 2-4 Big South) will face UNC Asheville (7-4-4, 4-1-1) at 6 p.m. at Greenwood Soccer Field.
Winthrop enters the matchup after earning consecutive victories over Presbyterian and Gardner-Webb, marking the team’s first back-to-back wins of the season. The Eagles tied their season high in goals against Presbyterian before defeating Gardner-Webb 1-0 last Saturday.
Cordelia McIntosh scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute against Gardner-Webb, with Monssi Avila-Gutierrez providing the assist. Freshman midfielder Lila Bowers also earned Big South Freshman of the Week honors after scoring twice against Presbyterian.
The Eagles currently sit seventh in the conference standings, one point behind Gardner-Webb and just outside tournament qualification. Avila-Gutierrez leads Winthrop with five goals this season.
UNC Asheville leads the all-time series 14-10-2 and has won the last two meetings. The Bulldogs defeated Winthrop 2-0 in Rock Hill last season. The Eagles’ most recent victory in the series came in March 2020, when they won 2-0 in Asheville.
Wednesday’s match offers Winthrop an opportunity to continue its late-season push toward the conference tournament.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live statistics available through UNC Asheville’s athletics website.
