South Pointe outscored Fort Mill 32 to 19 and Catawba Ridge held off Legion Collegiate Academy 12 to 7 on opening night of girls high school flag football in York County.
Fort Mill Builds a Lead and Loses It
Fort Mill could not have started faster. On the first play of the season, running back Abbey S. broke free and went the distance for a touchdown.
The Yellow Jackets kept scoring and carried a 19 to 7 lead into halftime. South Pointe adjusted after the break, tightened its defense and shut Fort Mill out over the final half while pulling ahead for the 32 to 19 win.
Catawba Ridge Survives a Late Interception
The night’s other game stayed close throughout. Catawba Ridge led 12 to 7 in the closing minute when Legion picked off a pass with about 30 seconds on the clock, giving the Lancers a chance to win it.
Legion got two plays out of the drive. As the offense lined up for a Hail Mary attempt, time expired.
Fort Mill, Catawba Ridge, South Pointe and Legion all return to the field next week. Schedules and game sites are posted through each school’s athletic department.
In other action York played Nation Ford, and Rock Hill played cross town rival Northwestern.
