A late-summer heatwave is set to bear down on York County beginning Tuesday, September 1, bringing mid-to-upper 90-degree temperatures back to the area, according to a weather update from Mike Griffith of the Carolina Weather Authority.
While Griffith notes this stretch of high heat will not reach the intensity of July’s heatwave, conditions will remain dangerous. The peak heating window will run daily between 11:00 AM and 7:00 PM, with high temperatures typically cresting around 5:30 PM. Relief is expected to arrive slowly over Labor Day weekend, with temperatures easing into the lower 90s by Sunday and the upper 80s on Monday.

The timing of this heat peak directly overlaps with peak afternoon practice windows and mid-week athletic events across Fort Mill, Nation Ford, Catawba Ridge, Rock Hill, Northwestern, and South Pointe high schools.
Local athletic departments adhere strictly to South Carolina High School League guidelines governing Heat Index values (WBGT – Wet Bulb Globe Temperature). When wet bulb temperatures rise, schools are required to adjust practice intensity, mandate increased water breaks, modify or eliminate heavy protective gear for football practices, or move activities entirely indoors or into late evening hours.
“All sports and extracurricular activities follow the SCHSL guidelines for heat or other weather related issues. Our coaches, trainers and other staff monitor the conditions and make any adjustments needed to safeguard the health of our students,” said Joe Burke, Fort Mill School district communications officer.
