Humane Society of York County – Pets of the Week

The Humane Society of York County is highlighting two adoptable pets this week while urging local residents to take extra precautions with animals during the region’s ongoing heat and humidity.

A Playful Young Cat Looks for a Home

Barbell, an estimated eight month old cat, arrived at the Humane Society of York County as an owner surrender through no fault of his own. He now lives in the shelter’s cat lounge, where he interacts with several other feline residents. Staff describe him as playful and social, with a fondness for other cats and for treats. He is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

Anyone interested in adopting Barbell can call the shelter at 803.802.0902 to schedule an appointment or visit in person. Adoption requirements are listed on the organization’s website, humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.

A Patient Dog Awaits Her Match

Bettina, a 3 year old dog, also came to the shelter as an owner surrender. According to the shelter, she needed time to settle in after her arrival but now enjoys walks, along with regular interaction with staff and volunteers. Because of the summer heat, her walks have been shortened and kept to shaded, grassy areas to help her stay cool.

Bettina previously lived in a home with other dogs, though the shelter has not yet conducted formal dog or cat testing with her. Staff said they are confident she would adjust well to a new home with proper introductions. She is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped. Those interested in meeting her can call 803.802.0902 to set up an appointment.

Heat Prompts Safety Reminders for Pet Owners

With temperatures and humidity climbing across York County, the Humane Society is reminding residents to keep animals indoors when possible, provide plenty of fresh water and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day.

The organization also continues to seek community support. Current needs include volunteers for the shelter and the PAWSibilities Thrift Shop and Boutique, as well as donations of bleach, laundry detergent, 55 gallon trash bags and kitchen bags. The shelter said it is also looking for help with laundry pickup and return during the humid summer months, since clean bedding and linens are in constant demand.

As an independent nonprofit, the Humane Society of York County receives no funding from any other humane society or government agency and relies entirely on community donations and volunteers, according to the organization.

Strong Start to 2026

So far in 2026, the shelter has placed 92 dogs and 252 cats, for a total of 344 pets adopted into new homes, the organization said.

Residents can learn more about volunteering, fostering and donating at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org. The shelter is located at 8177 Regent Parkway in Fort Mill.
