Autumn Saturday nights in South Carolina usually belong to tailgate smoke, crisp air, and direct-line football. On Saturday, they belonged to weather radars, late-night endurance, and two wildly different visions of gridiron dominance.
While Clemson waded through two hours of pregame lightning delays to grind out a midnight defensive masterpiece, South Carolina turned Williams-Brice Stadium into an old-school rushing clinic, battering Towson with a relentless ground assault.
Clemson 22, Georgia Southern 7: Survival in the Death Valley Night
If college football were measured purely in style points, Clemson’s home opener wouldn’t earn front-page poster space. But football in September — especially when delayed nearly two hours by lightning for the second straight week — is an exercise in pure survival.
Kicking off at 9:30 p.m. ET — believed to be the latest kickoff time in Death Valley history — the Tigers relied on a throttling defensive start and special teams precision to secure a 22-7 victory over Georgia Southern.

Defense Stands Tall
The Tigers’ defense spent the opening frame imposing absolute physical authority. Clemson forced three-and-outs on each of Georgia Southern’s first six possessions. Defensive end Will Heldt was a wrecking ball in the backfield, matching his career-high with 2.0 sacks and 3.0 tackles for loss.
Clemson surrendered just seven points on the evening—its stingiest defensive outing since holding South Carolina to seven in 2023.
Moore Keeps the Streak Alive
Offensively, signal-caller Christopher Vizzina opened the scoring with a 10-yard strike to wide receiver T.J. Moore, marking Moore’s 10th career touchdown catch. Quarterback Tait Reynolds took over on Clemson’s fourth drive, completing 16-of-27 passes for 178 yards while adding 38 yards on the ground.
Moore finished with seven catches for 103 yards—his fifth career 100-yard game. More importantly, catching a pass on the game’s first offensive snap extended Moore’s reception streak to 29 consecutive games. He now sits just one game shy of becoming the 12th player in Clemson history to reach a 30-game streak.

Hauser’s Boot and Dabo’s Milestone
When the offense stalled inside the red zone, sophomore kicker Nolan Hauser made sure the Tigers came away with points. Hauser drilled 5-of-5 field goal attempts (including bombs of 49 and 50 yards in the fourth quarter), matching his career high and accounting for 16 of Clemson’s 22 points. He joins Nelson Welch as the only kickers in Clemson history with multiple five-field-goal games.
The victory pushed Clemson to 100 all-time home opener wins (100-18-8) and elevated head coach Dabo Swinney to 188 career victories. Swinney passed Joe Paterno and Urban Meyer (187) for the fourth-most wins within the first 20 seasons of an FBS coaching career.

A Historical Night on the Ground
Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks simply bullied Towson in the trenches. South Carolina piled up 405 rushing yards—the third-most in program history and the most ever recorded in the Beamer era.
-
Matt Fuller sparked the highlight reel with a electrifying 55-yard touchdown sprint late in the second quarter.
-
LaNorris Sellers showcased his dual-threat prowess, breaking loose for a 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. It marked Sellers’ third career 100-yard rushing performance — trailing only Jeff Grantz (4) and Ron Bass (4) for most by a Gamecock QB — and his 14th career rushing score.
-
Jabree Coleman (3-yard TD) and Isaiah Augustave (55-yard house call) capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

Vicari Swain Rewrites the History Books
While the running game churned out yards, defensive back/return specialist Vicari Swain etched his name at the very top of the Gamecock record book.
In the first quarter, Swain fielded a punt and sliced through Towson’s coverage for a 58-yard touchdown return. Later in the game, he flew off the edge to block a Towson point-after attempt.
The return touchdown was the fifth punt return touchdown of Swain’s career, breaking the long-standing South Carolina record of 4 held by Dick Harris (1969–71). Swain, who previously returned two punts for scores against South Carolina State in 2025, now stands alone as the most dangerous punt returner in program history.
The Gamecock defense backed up the special teams spark, holding Towson to just 203 total yards and a mere 21 yards rushing—the third-fewest allowed in South Carolina history.
