Expect Delays: Concrete Pour Set for Thursday on Gold Hill Road

A segment of Gold Hill Road near the Knightsbridge neighborhood remains under temporary steel plates as crews finalize a two-step repair process following a significant water line leak and subsequent erosion.

York County representatives confirmed the damage was traced to a leaking corporation stop at the main utility line. While the leak was repaired the same day the sinkhole was reported, the underlying erosion left the roadway compromised.

A corporation stop (often called a “corp stop”) is a specialized valve that connects a private water service line to the main municipal water distribution pipe. It serves as the primary “gatekeeper” for water entering a property from the street and is the first point of control in the system.

Commuters should prepare for significant traffic delays beginning Thursday, April 16. While officials initially hoped to conclude the project sooner, contractor availability and competing priorities have pushed the final stages to the end of this week and early next week.

The permanent restoration involves a specific two-step technical process:

  • Thursday, April 16 (11:00 AM): Crews will begin pouring “flowable fill,” a specialized concrete mixture, into the excavation site. This material requires a curing period of at least 24 hours to stabilize the road base.

  • Monday, April 20: Once the base has cured, crews will return to apply the final asphalt top layer.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is monitoring the situation. This stretch of Highway 460 between Pleasant Road and Highway 160 has been a recurring site for infrastructure issues, marking one of several leaks to impact the area in recent years.

While the Knightsbridge entrance remains accessible, drivers are urged to use extreme caution when traveling over the steel plates and to expect lane closures or slow-moving traffic during the concrete pour on Thursday morning. If the schedule holds, the heavy-duty plates should be removed following the asphalt paving on Monday.
