A segment of Gold Hill Road is being held together by steel plates this week after a water service line leak caused significant erosion near the Knightsbridge neighborhood.
York County representatives confirmed Thursday that the damage was traced to a faulty connection fitting where a water service line met the main utility line. While the leak has been successfully repaired, the underlying erosion left a portion of the roadway compromised, necessitating the temporary use of heavy-duty steel plates to keep traffic flowing.
The incident is the latest in a string of infrastructure headaches for the area. Local officials noted that this is one of several water leaks to plague this specific stretch of Highway 460 between Pleasant Road and Highway 160 in recent years.
Commuters should prepare for potential delays starting early next week. Road crews are scheduled to begin excavation and permanent repairs Monday, with a goal of finishing the project and removing the plates by Friday, weather permitting.
For now, the Knightsbridge entrance and Gold Hill Road remains accessible, though officials are urging drivers to maintain caution when traveling over the plated sections of the highway.
