MARCH RECAP: Gamecocks, Tigers Lead Charge in Action-Packed March for South Carolina Sports

March has lived up to its reputation for South Carolina’s collegiate athletic programs, with postseason basketball taking center stage again. From the dominance of the top-ranked Gamecock women to a resilient showing by the Clemson Tigers, the Palmetto State has remained a focal point of the national sports landscape.

Basketball: Gamecocks Roll, Tigers Fight in Postseason

The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team continued its march toward a potential title, securing a spot in the Sweet 16 with a commanding 101-61 victory over the USC Trojans at Colonial Life Arena on Monday. Freshman Joyce Edwards led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds, as the Gamecocks’ depth proved too much for the visitors. They now prepare for a highly anticipated regional semifinal matchup.

Upstate, the Clemson Tigers saw their women’s tournament run end in a heartbreaker. After falling to Duke in the ACC Tournament earlier this month, the Tigers were eliminated in an overtime thriller by the Trojans (71-67) in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. On the men’s side, Clemson showed promise in the ACC Tournament, picking up a win against Wake Forest before falling in the quarterfinals.

Baseball: The Path Forward under Monte Lee

In a major shakeup for one of the nation’s premier baseball programs, the University of South Carolina announced Saturday, March 21, that it has parted ways with head baseball coach Paul Mainieri. The decision comes just 80 games into Mainieri’s tenure and follows a difficult 0-4 start to Southeastern Conference play.

Associate head coach Monte Lee has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the 2026 season.

The move was described as a mutual agreement between Mainieri and Athletics Director Jeremiah Donati. The Gamecocks (12-12, 1-5 SEC) suffered a devastating 22-6 loss to No. 4 Arkansas on Friday night, marking the program’s sixth consecutive defeat and serving as the final game of the Mainieri era.

“Jeremiah Donati and I have agreed that the baseball program will be better served with new leadership,” Mainieri said in a statement. “I take full responsibility for the win/loss record… I did not get the job done at a level that I expected, or the university deserves.”

Mainieri, 68, was lured out of a three-year retirement in June 2024 to replace Mark Kingston. Despite a Hall of Fame resume that included a 2009 national title at LSU, his time in Columbia was marked by a program-record 28 losses in 2025 and continued struggles against both conference and mid-major opponents this spring.

Lee, a former head coach at Clemson and the College of Charleston, took over the dugout immediately for the Saturday and Sunday games against Arkansas. His first major task will be stabilizing a team that has already faced losses to Northern Kentucky, Queens, and The Citadel this season.

Lee has already begun restructuring his staff, announcing on March 23 that Chris Gordon will move to an on-field assistant role and former Gamecock assistant Stuart Lake will return as Director of Program Development.

Baseball and Softball: SEC and ACC Grinds

The diamond sports have faced stiff competition as conference play heats up.

  • South Carolina Baseball: The Gamecocks (12-12, 0-5 SEC) are looking to bounce back after a tough home series against No. 4 Arkansas, which included a narrow 3-2 extra-inning loss on Saturday.

  • Clemson Baseball: The No. 14 Tigers recently dropped two games to Notre Dame but remain a formidable force in the ACC as they prepare for a midweek clash against Coastal Carolina.

  • Softball: South Carolina prepares for a high-profile showdown against Clemson on Wednesday, March 25, at Beckham Field.

Track and Field: Outdoor Season Sprints Ahead

The South Carolina Track & Field team opened its outdoor season with a strong showing at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Conway. The women’s team finished as runners-up, bolstered by victories in the 200m (Alexis Brown) and both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The men’s team finished seventh, highlighted by David Warmington’s win in the 110-meter hurdles.
