COLUMBIA, S.C. — Fort Mill High School dominated the short course events and broke a state record, securing a runner-up finish Saturday at the 2025 SCHSL 5A D2 Boys Championships at the University of South Carolina Natatorium.
The Yellow Jackets’ team of Turner Wiand, Dominic Impens, Parker Hightower, and Tate Preston started the day by winning the 200-yard Medley Relay in a state-record time of 1:32.75.
Impens, a senior, was a central figure for Fort Mill, setting an individual state record in the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 55.85 seconds to claim the gold medal. He also won the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 45.65. Senior Turner Wiand matched his teammate’s success, taking home two gold medals in the 50-yard Freestyle (21.39) and the 100-yard Backstroke (49.52).
Fort Mill finished second overall with 452.5 points, trailing only Eastside High School (645 points).
Nation Ford High School had a strong showing, finishing fourth overall with 266.5 points, fueled by impressive performances in the distance events.
Gavin Charcalla led the Falcons with two podium finishes, winning the grueling 500-yard Freestyle in 4:41.60 and taking second in the 200-yard Freestyle (1:43.99). Teammate Gray Reiger secured a first-place finish in the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 51.17 and added a bronze medal in the 500-yard Freestyle (4:45.42).
Meanwhile, Catawba Ridge High School placed ninth in the team standings with 127 points. The Copperheads’ best relay finish came in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, where the team of Robby Marino, Zachary Zickos, Luke Villano, and Asher Craig placed seventh (1:36.27). Senior Zachary Zickos contributed individual points with a 10th-place finish in the 50-yard Freestyle and a 14th-place finish in the 100-yard Freestyle.
