Celebrating National Newspaper Week
As communities across the country celebrate National Newspaper Week, The Tega Cay Sun is proud to highlight its mission of keeping local news free and accessible to everyone.
It started with a simple idea: bring daily local news to our community—free of charge. In June 2023, Thomas Hyslip founded The Tega Cay Sun with a vision to make local journalism a true public service, not a product hidden behind a paywall. While many media outlets prioritize national or statewide stories, The Sun was created to focus on what truly matters here, hyper-local coverage that connects and informs the people of Tega Cay.
A Local Paper with a Big Mission
The Tega Cay Sun began as an online publication providing daily updates about city council meetings, schools, sports, and community events. By October 2023, The Sun expanded its reach with a monthly printed edition, available at key locations throughout Tega Cay.
The response has been extraordinary. Together, the Tega Cay Sun website and Facebook page now attract over 300,000 unique visitors each month—a testament to the power and reach of free local journalism. This remarkable growth shows that when you remove paywalls, communities respond with engagement, trust, and support.
Free News for Everyone
In an era when many media outlets require subscriptions just to access basic local information, The Tega Cay Sun stands firmly on its belief that local news should always be free.
Our mission is simple: no one should have to pay to know what’s happening in their own neighborhood. By removing barriers, The Sun ensures that every resident—regardless of income—can stay informed about the stories, events, and decisions shaping Tega Cay’s future.
We also work closely with local businesses, offering affordable, transparent advertising opportunities that support both our readers and the local economy. We view these partnerships as collaborations, helping local commerce thrive while keeping The Sun free for everyone.
Bridging the Gap
The Tega Cay Sun is bringing back the look and feel of a hometown newspaper while embracing the immediacy and accessibility of digital media. Our goal is to bridge the gap between large-scale outlets that focus on national headlines and the community-first journalism that highlights local heroes, volunteers, students, and small businesses making a difference every day.
This approach has redefined what a local paper can be both nostalgic and modern, intimate and far-reaching.
Redefining Local Journalism
As we celebrate National Newspaper Week, The Tega Cay Sun reaffirms its commitment to changing the way local news is delivered. With daily online updates and a monthly print edition, we’re proving that quality journalism doesn’t need to hide behind a subscription link.
We’re not just reporting stories we’re preserving the voice and spirit of our community.
