In a thrilling crosstown rivalry game, the South Pointe Stallions mounted a dramatic late-game comeback to defeat the undefeated Northwestern Trojans 27-23. The victory, capped by a go-ahead touchdown pass in the final minute, handed the reigning state champions their first loss of the season.
Northwestern, coming off an undefeated 2024 season that ended with the South Carolina Class 5A-Division 3 state championship, entered the game with a perfect record. They defeated Irmo on Dec. 14, 2024, to secure the program’s sixth state title and a No. 2 ranking in Sports Illustrated’s Top 25 South Carolina High School Football rankings.
The Trojans took a 23-12 lead in the fourth quarter after a 40-yard field goal by Alex Bendt. However, the Stallions fought back. A 34-yard rushing touchdown by J’zavien Currence, followed by a successful two-point conversion, cut the lead to 23-20 with five minutes remaining.
South Pointe’s defense sealed the upset with a crucial interception in the final two minutes, setting up the game-winning drive. With under a minute to play, the Stallions completed a touchdown pass to take a 27-23 lead. Another interception on Northwestern’s final possession ended the game.
Northwestern opens up conference play when they travel to Nation Ford next Friday. Both teams enter the game at 3-1.
