National Pretzel Day: A Twisted Treat with Deep Roots

Get ready to raise a soft pretzel (or two!) this Friday, April 26th, for National Pretzel Day! This isn’t just another quirky food holiday. National Pretzel Day has a rich history, dating back to 2003 when Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell officially recognized the pretzel’s importance to the state.

The pretzel’s journey goes back even further, possibly originating in the 7th century. While some speculate it arrived in America on the Mayflower, it’s confirmed that German settlers brought pretzels to Pennsylvania around 1710.

The Catholic Church played a key role in the pretzel’s early story. During Lent, strict fasting rules prohibited meat, dairy, and eggs. The simple pretzel, made only with water, flour, and salt, became a perfect substitute, keeping folks nourished during this religious period.

Originally, pretzels were soft and similar to today’s beloved soft pretzel. They might have even been called “bracellae” first, which is Latin for “little arms.” This term eventually evolved into the German word “bretzel.”
