In Health with Dr. Brian: Six Steps to Mastering Meal Prep

With our busy lives, meal prepping can be a game-changer, helping you save time, money, and stay on track with your nutritional goals.

If you’re struggling to be consistent with your nutrition, or unsure how to start meal prepping, here’s 6 ways you can approach meal preparation:

1. Plan Your Menu
Begin by outlining your meals for the week. Take into account your dietary preferences, nutritional goals, and the ingredients you already have. A balanced menu should include a mix of proteins, healthy fats, complex carbs, and plenty of colorful veggies.

2. Make Your Grocery List
Based on your planned menu, create a grocery list of what you’ll need. This step prevents impulse buying and ensures you have all the necessary ingredients on hand. Stick to the list to avoid unnecessary purchases.

3. Prep Your Ingredients
Spend some time washing, chopping, and portioning your ingredients once you’re back from the grocery store. Store them in airtight containers or resealable bags for easy access throughout the week. This step significantly cuts down cooking time.

4. Batch Your Cooking
Choose a day when you have a bit more time, like a weekend, and cook in larger quantities. Prepare staples like grains, proteins, and roasted veggies. Divide them into individual portions for the week. You can also freeze some meals for later to add variety.

5. Organize Your Storage
Maintaining an organized fridge and pantry is essential for efficient meal prep. Arrange your prepped ingredients in a way that makes it easy to grab what you need. Label containers with dates to keep track of freshness.

6. Assemble Your Meals
When it’s time to eat, simply combine your prepped ingredients into well-balanced meals. Mix and match your proteins, grains, and veggies for different flavors and textures. Using a variety of sauces, spices, and herbs can transform simple ingredients into delicious dishes.

By following these six steps, you’ll find that meal prepping becomes a seamless part of your routine.

Remember, consistency is key when it comes to meal prepping. As you become more adept, you’ll save time, energy, and money while enjoying the benefits of healthier eating.
