There’s nothing quite like a good burger, hot off the grill. This is especially true in the summer. The sound of children playing in the backyard as you munch on a burger with the cold beverage of your choice is one of life’s simple pleasures.
How are you cooking that burger? Are you throwing it on the grill? If so, which grill? Chances are, you’ll tell me about your Green Egg, Traeger or top of the line Weber gas grill. All of these are great choices of course, but I’d like to discuss an option you may not have considered.
The humble charcoal grill.
Perhaps you’re not familiar with cooking on a charcoal grill. Maybe you’re even a little intimidated and you’re unsure where to start. Have no fear my friends. I’m going to give you two very inexpensive options that will serve as your “starter kit” into the wonderful world of charcoal grills. The best part? Both options are incredibly cheap (I’m sure you find this shocking).
Weber Jumbo Joe Premium Charcoal Grill (22”)
This is the perfect starter or second grill for those of you wanting to learn how to cook with charcoal. At a price that’s just under $100, this grill comes with everything you need and nothing you don’t.
My wife happened to buy mine from Wal-Mart for $85 a few years ago. At first, I thought I’d use it as a secondary grill, only needing it when I had an overflow or to light my charcoal. I quickly found that the simplicity and ability to sear meat won me over. I was stunned. A product that was as cheap as this shouldn’t provide me with so much happiness.
With a shallower bowl than the standard Weber Kettle, the Jumbo Joe isn’t necessarily the best option if you’re looking to smoke meats for a long period of time. It is a great option; however, if you’re wanting to throw hot dogs, burgers or chicken on the grill. The shallow shape allows you to sear meats while achieving that great charcoal flavor you’re looking for in a shorter period of time.

Expert Grill Heavy Duty 24-inch Charcoal Grill
Compared to the Weber, this thing is a Cadillac. The Weber provides simplicity in a no frills package. For a slightly lower price ($96) the Expert Grill is a great option for those of you who enjoy having more gadgets to tinker with while you’re cooking.
I’m amazed at how well this grill cooks given its low price. With 4 vents to open and close, a grill grate that you can crank up and down to moderate your temperature and a lid that closes secure and tight, it’s easy to keep a consistent temperature no matter what you’re cooking.
Whereas the Weber isn’t a great option for smoking, this one is. With its square design and larger cooking surface, you have the ability to throw a brisket in the middle and let the grill do the work for you. I speak from experience, this grill is the real deal, especially given the low price.
There are of course any number of more expensive charcoal grills you can buy. This is the case with just about anything. My question is always the same, why spend more when you don’t have to? Both of these options will give you years of happiness and grilling pleasure. It may take a bit of time to get used to cooking with them, but it’s not nearly as hard as you might think.
Even if you find yourself using it less often than you thought, you’re only out $100.
Once you’ve made the leap I think you’ll be surprised.
I’d recommend questioning why you didn’t take the leap sooner while eating a delicious charcoal grilled burger.
