I’ve never been much of a collector. Like most boys of my generation, I attempted to collect baseball cards but never really got hooked on it. Even though I don’t collect, I know plenty of people who do. I can also understand the jubilation you’d feel at finding that one “special thing” you’ve been looking for but were unable to find. If you’re one of those people, hoping to find hidden treasure for your collection, Collecting Problems in Fort Mill has you covered.
Opened in January 2023 by Steven Seibert, Collecting Problems is located across from Barney’s Bar in the Ft Mill Storage Business Center. Don’t let the location fool you, this place has tons to offer for locals looking to get into collecting or expand their collections. From vintage movies, records and toys to cards and comics, the cozy space is stuffed with different items depending on the room you’re standing in. “I try to collect a little bit of everything for everyone,” says Steven.
Steven and his wife moved from Jacksonville to Fort Mill a couple of years ago. Both teachers at the time, the couple originally moved here for the schools. Although his wife still teaches, Steven wanted to pursue his passion and open a store stocking items he wasn’t able to find outside of Charlotte or Rock Hill. According to Steven, “I couldn’t believe there wasn’t anything like this in Fort Mill, so I figured I’d give it a shot.”
Although he buys from distributors, many of the items for sale in the store originated from Steven’s own collection. Asked whether he still collects, Steven said, “I don’t have my own collection anymore, basically anything is for sale.” According to him, when going from customer to store owner, you have to “Cut all emotional attachments with your stuff.”
When I asked which item or items in the store he was most proud of, Steven was quick to point out that he has a large back issue inventory of comic books. A mix of modern and vintage, I did take notice that it occupied the largest of several rooms where items were located.
As for records, Steven made mention that he tries to carry items the bigger box stores wouldn’t have available. This includes heavy metal, 90s rap and grunge. His card and toy inventory also contains both new and old items, depending on what his customers may be looking for.
The upcoming holiday season provides a great excuse for you and your family to check out this local shop tailored to hobby enthusiasts. Whether you like to listen to music, read a good comic or relive a childhood memory with a toy from your past, Steven most likely has something you’d be interested in.
Do yourself a favor and check it out. You may find this place offers you a problem worth collecting.
