Mr. Penny Pincher

No matter what your financial situation may be, it’s expensive these days to buy just about anything. From gas and food to clothing and housing, most things are more expensive than they were pre-pandemic. Getting a great deal on just about anything is not only smart but may be essential for some families.

Enter, Mr. Penny Pincher. A weekly write up designed to help you save money by providing the best places to spend your hard earned cash on the things we need or want in and around the Tega Cay/Fort Mill area.

In this week’s edition, we’ll focus on shopping for groceries. Rather than spew a bunch of statistics your way, I think we can all agree that food continues to be pretty expensive. Saving money on food has become an important part of attaining a balanced family budget.

The good news is, we have several options within and around Tega Cay. Several Harris Teeters, Wal-Mart and Publix are all easily accessible. But, which is the best for price AND quality? This is easy, and it’s one I haven’t mentioned yet. It’s Aldi.

For those of you who have never shopped at Aldi, here me out. If you’re one of those people who has to have the “name brand everything,” then this store may not be for you. But if you’re simply looking for good quality food at a great price, it’s hard to beat shopping at Aldi.

Looking for a jar of pickles? Easy enough. Rather than the myriad of brands and prices to sift through at other stores, Aldi will offer you 2-3 choices and all at a rock bottom price. By removing the need to choose, it’s easy to simply get what you’re looking for without putting much thought behind it. You’re not paralyzed thinking about the particular brand you want/need, you simply pick out what’s offered and move on.

One of the other items that’s both interesting and exciting about shopping at Aldi; you never know what you’re going to find. They don’t always have exactly what you’re looking for, but they may have something you never thought of as well. This is especially true with their German offerings (Aldi is German owned). I never thought about making pork schnitzel for dinner, but there they are, straight from Germany. I may as well give them a shot and try something different.

The layout of the store is also conducive to a great shopping experience. Since it’s small, it’s easy to walk around and throw things into your cart as you pass. Where else are you going to find a 16″ large cheese pizza for $6? How about a can of organic spaghetti sauce for under $3?

The meat selection is also incredible. For those weekend grillers such as myself, Aldi offers every kind of meat you could want and all at very low prices. I literally won’t buy my meat anywhere else, there’s simply no need to pay more when I know I can spend less for the exact same thing.

Ok great, it’s cheap, but how’s the food? Simply put, it’s fantastic. Half the time my family can’t tell the difference between Aldi and the name brand. Often times the food is better than what I would’ve bought at any of the other stores mentioned.

We’ve been conditioned to buy the brands we know and for good reason. Brands such as Heinz, Ocean Spray and Le Croix have worked very hard to convince you they’re worth the price you’ll have to pay at the major grocery stores. I’m here to tell you, there’s a different and perhaps better alternative.

If you want to save money on your grocery bill each week, there’s no better option than Aldi. You will see the savings each month. You’ll also taste the reason why this seemingly discount grocery store is bustling with cost conscious consumers looking to get the best bang for their buck.

Visit Aldi @ 3655 Vandora Springs Road (off Hwy 160) in Fort Mill.
