Sellers’ Heroics Lift No. 23 South Carolina Past A&M, 17-9; Tigers Roll Over Louisville, 31-14

Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers (16) left the field late in the first half due to an ankle injury. He returned after the half with a limp to help his time complete a 17-9 win over Texas A&M.

On a night when his body tried to pull him to the turf, LaNorris Sellers simply refused to stay down.

Playing through a painful ankle injury late in the fourth quarter, No. 23 South Carolina’s star quarterback delivered the defining moment of the Gamecocks’ season, breaking free for a 41-yard touchdown run to seal a gritty 17-9 victory over Texas A&M on Saturday.

Sellers’ backbreaking score came just one snap after the Gamecocks defense held the line on a crucial fourth-down stop. His breakaway dash capped a night where he threw for 251 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-31 passing, guiding South Carolina to its fourth consecutive win.

LaNorris Sellers (16) scored the go ahead touchdown for the Gamecocks Saturday night.

For much of the evening, Texas A&M seemed to control the rhythm of the game. The Aggies dominated time of possession by nearly 10 minutes and outgained the Gamecocks behind running back Rueben Owens II, who churned out a season-high 137 yards on the ground.

Yet, for all their production, the Aggies couldn’t capitalize when it mattered most.

The tide turned midway through the third quarter. Holding a 9-7 lead, Texas A&M sent out kicker David Olano for a short field goal to extend the lead. Olano, who had been a flawless 16-for-16 on the season, hooked the kick — his first miss of the year.

That shift in momentum opened the door for South Carolina. Midway through the final frame, kicker Malik Orsan drilled a 43-yard field goal to put the Gamecocks ahead for good at 10-9, setting up Sellers’ late-game heroics.

Sellers had plenty of help on both sides of the ball. Nyck Harbor hauled in four catches for 70 yards to keep drives alive, while defender Fred Johnson anchored a relentless Gamecock defense with a game-high 11 tackles, a sack, and two tackles-for-loss.

Texas A&M made one last desperate push, driving all the way to the South Carolina 3-yard line in the closing seconds. But under heavy pressure, quarterback Marcel Reed’s final pass sailed harmlessly over his receiver’s head as time expired, triggering a celebration on the Gamecocks’ sideline.
