Winthrop Women Earn Historic All-Conference Recognition at Big South Championships

Winthrop women’s cross country made history at the Big South Championships, as Janie Spicer and Anna Conrad each earned First Team All-Conference honors for the first time two Eagle women have received the recognition in the same season since 1998.

The Eagles finished seventh in the women’s 5K at Milliken Research Park, while the Winthrop men placed eighth in the 8K.

Spicer led the women with a fifth-place finish in 17:38.3, followed closely by Conrad, who finished sixth in 17:45.8. Their performances marked Winthrop’s first All-Conference finishes since the 2020-21 season.

The last time two Winthrop women earned All-Conference honors in the same year was 1998, when Beth Greene and Mary Crawley accomplished the feat.

Conrad also received the Big South Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, adding to an impressive championship performance.

On the men’s side, Spencer Shealy paced the Eagles with a 23rd-place finish in 25:19.4. Ethan Gear earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team.

Winthrop will return to competition Friday, Nov. 13, at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Spartanburg.
