Fort Mill Girls Golf Places Sixth at State as Lupton Chases Individual Title

Fort Mill eighth grader Addie Lupton finished second individually at the South Carolina High School League Class 5A girls golf state championship Oct. 26 and 27, shooting rounds of 81 and 74 for a 155 total, according to final results posted by the league.

Dorman’s Ac Peake won the individual title at 150 after rounds of 78 and 72. Lupton finished five strokes back, and Cane Bay’s Julia Gressette placed third at 158.

Lupton’s finish was the best by any golfer from York or Lancaster County at this year’s girls state championships in any classification. She did it with all four of her high school years still ahead of her.

Second round surge

Lupton opened with an 81 on Monday, which left her tied for third, three shots behind Peake and four behind Gressette, who led the field after one round with a 77.

Her 74 on Tuesday was the second lowest round of the day in the 5A field, trailing only Peake’s 72. Gressette shot 81 in the final round, and Lupton moved past her into second place by three strokes.

Fort Mill places sixth as a team

Fort Mill finished sixth among 16 full teams with a 729 total, posting a 370 in the first round and a 359 in the second. The 11 stroke improvement on the second day left the Yellow Jackets nine shots behind fifth place Carolina Forest and seven ahead of seventh place Chapin.

River Bluff won the team title at 654, 10 strokes ahead of Dorman. Lexington finished third at 695.

Claire Collins was Fort Mill’s second scorer, shooting 84 in both rounds for a 168 that tied her for 13th. Lauren Venino tied for 34th at 187 with rounds of 94 and 93.
