Mamba and Hunter Wait for Homes at Humane Society of York County

An orange and white cat named Mamba and a 4½ month old retriever mix named Hunter are this week’s featured adoptable pets at the Humane Society of York County shelter on Regent Parkway in Fort Mill.

The shelter has placed 569 animals in homes so far in 2026, including 119 dogs and 450 cats, according to Mary Beth Knapp, a Humane Society of York County volunteer.

Mamba needs a quiet start

Mamba arrived at the shelter as a stray. Staff estimate she is 1 year and 9 months old.

She can be nervous with new people, Knapp said, but warms up once she has time to settle in. The shelter recommends she go to a home where she is the only cat.

Mamba is spayed, vaccinated, tested and microchipped. She is housed in the shelter’s Big Cat Room, though Knapp said a window seat in a real home would suit her better.

Hunter is all puppy

Hunter came to the shelter as an owner surrender through no fault of his own, Knapp said. He has been taking trips off site with trained volunteers and has completed puppy training at the Zoom Room.

Knapp was candid about what a puppy demands. Potty training, chewing and accidents come with the territory, and she said families should expect about two years of puppyhood before a dog settles down.

“But boy is it worth it,” she said.

Hunter is neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.

How to adopt

Both animals can be seen at the shelter at 8177 Regent Parkway in Fort Mill. Appointments can be made by calling 803.802.0902. Adoption requirements are posted at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.

October is also Pit Bull Appreciation Month at the shelter, which has several pit bull type dogs available for adoption.

Halloween sale at the Holiday Pop Up

The humane society’s 17th annual Holiday Pop Up shop at 232 Main St. in downtown Fort Mill is selling all Halloween costumes, decorations and themed clothing at 50 percent off through Oct. 31. The discount does not apply to fall, Thanksgiving or Christmas merchandise.

The shop is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Proceeds support the shelter.

Other ways to help

The shelter is asking for donations of laundry detergent, bleach and both hard and soft dog treats. Volunteers are also needed to take home clean laundry, dry and fold it, and return it.

Residents can volunteer at the shelter, foster animals, or donate gently used items to the PAWSibilities thrift shop at 2144 Carolina Place in Fort Mill. The organization also sells items on eBay. Information on volunteering, fostering and donating is available at humanesocietyofyorkcounty.org.
