York County Warns of Scam Emails Impersonating Planning Department

York County says fraudulent invoice emails claiming to be from its Planning & Development office are circulating, and it will never ask applicants to wire money.

York County is warning residents about scam emails that claim to be invoices from the county’s Planning & Development department, according to a notice posted by the county on Oct. 23.

The county said anyone who receives such an email should check the sender’s address closely. Legitimate invoices for application fees come only from addresses ending in “@yorkcountysc.gov” and never from the Planning Director personally, the county said.

Real invoice emails will always include the associated project number and project name, and they direct applicants to pay through their online permitting account, according to the county. Staff will never send a paper or PDF attachment as an invoice and will never direct someone to make a payment through wire transfer, the county said.

The county accepts only cash, checks, or credit card payments for these fees, according to the notice.
