Winthrop Men’s Soccer Ends Losing Streak With Draw at Virginia Tech

Winthrop University’s men’s soccer team snapped its four-game losing streak Wednesday night, earning a 1-1 draw against Virginia Tech in a nonconference matchup in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Eagles (5-8-2, 2-3 Big South) rallied from a halftime deficit to secure their first result against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since Sept. 10, 2003, when they played No. 24 Clemson to a 1-1 draw.

Virginia Tech (7-5-3, 3-2-1 ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute when Chase Vazquez scored on a shot that deflected off a Winthrop defender and into the net.

Winthrop responded early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Jorge Perez delivered a free kick to the back post, where Josh Murray headed the ball in front of goal for Teo Jelaca to finish and tie the match.

The Eagles had opportunities to take the lead, including a 69th-minute attempt by Alfie Humphrey that narrowly missed the left post. Jelaca also fired a volley on target in the 78th minute, but a Hokies defender blocked the attempt.

Virginia Tech held a 21-8 advantage in total shots and led 6-3 in shots on goal. Winthrop goalkeeper Euan Brindley recorded four saves during his 45 minutes in goal.

Winthrop returns home Saturday, Oct. 24, for its final regular-season home game against Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. A Senior Night ceremony is scheduled before the match.
