Bob Auman won the Tega Cay Men’s Golf Association Match Play Championship, defeating Tom Hyslip 2 and 1 in the final of the handicapped event.
The win closed out a bracket that began this spring with 64 players divided into four flights of 16. The tournament was single elimination, so one loss ended a golfer’s run. Players arranged their own matches and had to finish each round by a posted deadline, starting with an April 5 cutoff for the opening round and ending with an October final.
Every match was played with handicap strokes, putting golfers of different skill levels on even footing over six rounds.
Auman played out of the third flight. He opened with a 5 and 4 win over Eric Thompson and beat Jim Dixon by the same margin in the second round. A 6 and 4 win over Rich Padgett put him in the flight final, where he edged Andrew Dunlap 1 up.
In the semifinals, Auman faced Justin Adams, who had won the fourth flight with a 7 and 6 rout of Jeff Dailey. Auman beat him 3 and 2 to reach the final.
