South Carolina Leaders Join Forces to Promote School Bus Safety

South Carolina education and public safety officials will highlight efforts to protect students on the road and remind motorists of their responsibilities around school buses during National School Bus Safety Week, Oct. 19-23.

State Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver will join South Carolina Department of Public Safety Col. Christopher Williamson, school district transportation officials and South Carolina Highway Patrol representatives for a joint press conference Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The event is scheduled for the Richland County Bus Depot at 8012 Wilson Blvd. in Columbia.

Officials from the South Carolina Department of Education will discuss measures the agency has taken to improve school bus safety. Highway Patrol troopers will review traffic safety rules and explain how motorists can help protect students as they travel to and from school.

National School Bus Safety Week is an annual campaign focused on raising awareness about the importance of safe student transportation and encouraging drivers to exercise caution around school buses.

Motorists are reminded to remain alert in school zones and watch for buses stopping to load or unload students. Drivers must obey school bus signals and applicable state laws designed to protect children crossing roadways.

The annual observance brings together educators, transportation professionals, law enforcement agencies and communities to reinforce safe driving practices and help prevent school bus-related accidents.
