As part of our continuing effort to bring local news that’s impactful to our readers, we’ve proactively reached out to the candidates running for Fort Mill School Board.
We will not manipulate their answers in any way, we’ll simply provide to you, our readers. This will allow you to make an informed choice.
This week, we’ll introduce Melissa Maynard
Children First. Strong Schools. Bright Futures.
This represents more than a slogan; it embodies my vision for our school district.
I am a proud United States Navy veteran and a Human Resources professional with ten years of experience supporting the federal government. I am also a mother of six children, four of whom attend schools within the district. I am married to my husband, Sam Maynard. I hold an MBA from Ohio Christian University and possess various federal HR certifications.
Currently, I serve as the Secretary of the Doby’s Bridge PTO, a position I have held since 2020. I am also the Vice-Chair of the School Improvement Council (SIC) at Doby’s Bridge and serve on the SIC for Catawba Ridge High School. Additionally, I have coached for Rock Hill Parks and Recreation and Fort Mill Parks and Recreation, and I have been involved with two youth football and cheerleading organizations. My community involvement also includes serving as Chair of the Massey Community Social Committee, a member of the Massey Advisory Committee, and participating in various other committees.
My family relocated to Fort Mill in December 2020 due to a career move for my husband. We chose this area because of its excellent schools, strong sense of community, and the desire to establish roots. After moving here, I actively joined the PTO and engaged in community events, as community involvement is very meaningful to me. I am always seeking new ways to serve and support our community.
When I decided to run for the school board, I emphasized that my motivation was not for personal gain but to serve our children and community. My campaign is centered on sustaining and enhancing the current level of excellence within our schools. I aspire to be an active listener, a voice for the community, and to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table.
Through my years of experience in HR and the military, I have worked with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I have learned that teamwork is essential; no single person can make a difference alone, but a collaborative team can achieve great success. While respectful disagreement is natural, our primary goal is to foster growth for our students.
My priorities include supporting continued growth for every student, expanding resources, and focusing on teacher retention and recruitment. Although I may not have all the answers, I promise to listen, support, and ensure that community concerns are heard and addressed. As a lifelong learner, I am committed to growing, supporting our community, and working towards the best outcomes for our students.
