Winthrop Men’s Soccer Hosts ETSU in Nonconference Matchup

Winthrop men’s soccer returns to Eagle Field on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to host East Tennessee State University in a nonconference matchup scheduled for 6 p.m. in Rock Hill.

The Eagles enter the contest with a 5-6-1 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Big South Conference play after dropping consecutive games. Winthrop fell 3-0 at UNC Asheville on Friday following a 3-2 loss to nationally ranked UNC Wilmington.

Before the recent skid, Winthrop earned a 4-0 conference victory over Presbyterian College, scoring all four goals in the second half. Jorge Perez recorded a hat trick in a 15-minute span.

Perez and Juma Baden lead the Eagles with seven goals apiece, ranking third in the Big South in total goals. Baden also leads Winthrop in points per game with 1.50, fourth-best in the conference. The pair’s seven goals each mark the first time since 2015 that two Winthrop players have reached that total in the same season.

Winthrop opened conference play with a 3-1 victory at Radford, where Baden scored twice and Pablo Ortega added a goal.

ETSU enters Tuesday’s match with a 6-6-2 overall record and a 2-0-1 mark in Southern Conference play.

The all-time series between the Eagles and Buccaneers is tied 2-2-2. The teams played to a scoreless draw last season in Johnson City, Tennessee. Winthrop’s last home meeting with ETSU came in 2014, when the Eagles earned a 4-2 victory.

Tuesday’s match will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
