The South Carolina State Transport Police is conducting Operation Safe DRIVE, a comprehensive program aimed at reducing dangerous driving and collisions on the state’s major highways.
Safe DRIVE stands for Distracted, Reckless, Impaired and Visibility Enforcement. The program combines outreach, education and enforcement to address unsafe driving behaviors before they result in crashes.
The enforcement component focuses on high-crash corridors, with officers conducting highly visible traffic enforcement and monitoring driver behavior around commercial motor vehicles. Officers will also check commercial vehicles for compliance with federal regulations and enforce South Carolina traffic laws.
Safe DRIVE enforcement operations are planned for I-20, I-26, I-77, I-85 and I-95. The State Transport Police will work with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies along the designated corridors.
Officers will focus on violations of state law and federal commercial-vehicle regulations that can contribute to crashes. Enforcement efforts are intended to improve safety for both commercial truck drivers and motorists traveling near large vehicles.
The State Transport Police also will use media advisories and press releases ahead of enforcement initiatives to promote its safety message, “Target Zero.”
The program’s overall goal is to encourage safer driving habits and create greater public awareness that distracted, reckless and impaired driving can put all highway users at risk.
