There is a distinct, electric hum that accompanies a high school football team when it realizes it can hit a gear the other side simply cannot match. For the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets, that moment came right after halftime beneath the Friday night lights at Westwood High.
What began as a tense, back-and-forth non-conference duel transformed into a absolute avalanche, as Fort Mill rode an explosive second half to a commanding 63-21 victory over the Redhawks — marching into region play with a perfect 5-0 record.
For one half, Westwood held its ground. The Redhawks struck first with an early one-yard goal-line plunge. But Fort Mill answered in short order, leaning on the tough, physical running of Broden Mitcheson, who punched in a three-yard touchdown to level the score. Moments later, Brody Ranucci fought his way through a crowded box for a five-yard rushing score, giving the visitors their first lead.
Westwood refused to fold before the break, tying the game at 14-14 on a precise 15-yard touchdown strike from quarterback to Brady Austin. But high school football can flip on a single snap. Just before the halftime air horn sounded, Fort Mill quarterback Harper Love launched a breathtaking 80-yard bomb to Greyson Love, stunning the home sideline and sending the Yellow Jackets into the locker room ahead 21-14.
If the first half was a boxing match, the third quarter was a knockout blow.
Fort Mill came out of the break with unrelenting defensive pressure. Smith Stapleton pounced on a Westwood fumble at the 14-yard line, setting up Mitcheson’s second short touchdown run of the night. Minutes later, another Westwood fumble gifted the Yellow Jackets short field position — which Harper Love promptly turned into a 12-yard touchdown pass to Nate Gerhart.
By the time Aiden Ohara punched in a six-yard touchdown run and Harper Love found Greyson Love again for a 20-yard strike to open the fourth quarter, the game had completely unspooled for the Redhawks.
Mitcheson delivered the night’s exclamation point shortly after, bursting through the line and outracing the entire safety unit for a sensational 80-yard touchdown run. Following an interception by Xander Jantzen, Ohara added a final seven-yard capstone to seal the 63-21 rout.
With a perfect 5-0 record intact, Fort Mill now faces its toughest test of the autumn: a heavyweight showdown next Friday at home against undefeated Dorman (5-0) to open region play.
Defensive Tussle Ends in Frustration For Nation Ford
Back in Fort Mill, the mood was far grimmer as Nation Ford opened region play at home, falling 14-2 to Clover in a physical, penalty-marred contest that highlighted the Falcons’ ongoing offensive gridlock.
The opening half was defined less by fluid execution and more by whistle-to-whistle friction, as a barrage of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties called on both teams derailed any real momentum.
Nation Ford’s defense fought valiantly all night, keeping the Falcons within arm’s reach. Their effort provided the team’s only points of the evening in the early going, when a mishandled snap on a fourth-down Clover punt rolled out the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety.
Nation Ford’s season-long offensive nightmares continued to haunt them all evening. Miscommunications on routes, blown conversions, and a rash of costly interceptions continually stifled drives before they could cross midfield.
Through six games, the Falcons (0-6) have found themselves deeply in the red, having been outscored by a staggering total of over 150 points across their winless campaign. Clover took advantage of the short fields provided by turnover after turnover, doing just enough on the ground to secure the 14-2 victory.
Despite the heartbreak, high school football offers the mercy of a fresh slate every week. Nation Ford gets another crack at breaking into the win column next Friday when they travel to Lake Wylie to take on Clover’s neighborhood rivals.
