Five York County Eateries Draw a C or B in June State Inspections

An Indian restaurant in Fort Mill received a C grade in June 2026, the lowest mark among the 238 food inspections York County recorded during the month. Four other establishments in Fort Mill, Rock Hill, and Clover received a B.

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture, which oversees retail food safety in the state, grades establishments after each inspection and posts the reports as public record. A C is the lowest letter grade the agency assigns. Several of the June reports also flagged repeat problems as consecutive violations that could be referred to the department’s enforcement section, which can carry penalties.

Persis Indian Grill in Fort Mill

Persis Indian Grill, at 1504 Carolina Place Drive in Fort Mill, scored 73 points and received a C during a routine inspection June 10, according to the Department of Agriculture report. The inspector cited two or more priority violations that were not corrected during the visit.

Among the findings, a back kitchen handwashing sink reached only 75 degrees, short of the 100 degree minimum the state requires, and the kitchen hand sink had no soap. Inspectors also found raw eggs stored above ready-to-eat food and several items holding at unsafe temperatures in the walk-in cooler, including chicken at 55 degrees and beef at 56 degrees, well above the 41 degree cold holding limit. Those items were corrected on site.

The report noted that food was being stored in thin plastic shopping bags in the cooler and freezer, a problem marked as uncorrected and consecutive that may be sent to enforcement, along with a working spray bottle missing a contents label. The wash water at the three-compartment sink measured 96 degrees while dishes were being cleaned, below the 110 degree minimum. The restaurant returned to an A on a follow-up inspection June 17.

Fiery Crab in Rock Hill

Fiery Crab, at 1022 Camden Avenue in Rock Hill, scored 79 points and received a B during a routine inspection June 8. The inspector cited two or more priority violations.

Inspectors found hot items on the steam table below safe temperatures, including crawfish soup at 86 degrees, and cold items on the cooks line above the limit, including raw shrimp at 48 degrees and cooked sausage at 46 degrees. The cold holding finding was marked as a consecutive violation that could be referred to enforcement. Several prepared foods, including seafood salad and cooked rice, lacked discard-date labels, and a mop sink hose was found under pressure without a backflow preventer, another repeat item flagged for possible enforcement. The staff corrected the temperature problems during the visit. The restaurant returned to an A on a follow-up inspection June 19.

Millstone Pizza and Taphouse in Rock Hill

Millstone Pizza and Taphouse, at 121 Caldwell St. in Rock Hill, scored 83 points and received a B during a routine inspection June 24. The inspector cited two or more priority violations.

Inspectors found employee beverages stored on a shelf with food containers and directly on a food-contact surface, and a handwashing sink by the grill without hand cleanser. A container of potato salad and a beer sauce made with raw egg were both held past their discard dates, and the person in charge voluntarily threw them out. Inspectors also noted fruit flies in the bar area that were not corrected during the visit. The report listed a separate complaint that the inspector could not verify at the time. A follow-up inspection is required.

Small Bar in Fort Mill

Small Bar, at 3415 Highway 51 in Fort Mill, scored 83 points and received a B during a routine inspection June 26. The inspector cited multiple priority violations that were not corrected during the visit.

Inspectors found shredded cheese at 57 degrees and cut tomato at 67 degrees on the make line, above the cold holding limit, and reported that the business did not appear to have a date-marking system in place, leaving discard dates for items in the reach-in coolers unclear. A sprayer at the three-compartment sink sat too low to provide a required air gap. Inspectors also noted grease and debris buildup at the cook line and a kitchen wall with exposed wood and foam. A follow-up inspection is required.

Wylie’s Eats and Drinks in Clover

Wylie’s Eats and Drinks, at 4052 Charlotte Highway in Clover, scored 80 points and received a B during a routine inspection June 16. Inspectors found two handwashing sinks blocked, one by a delivery and one holding a whisk, which staff cleared during the visit.

Several items in the walk-in cooler were holding above the cold limit, including beef at 47 degrees and lettuce at 49 degrees, a finding marked as a consecutive violation that may be sent to enforcement. Inspectors also reported a significant number of flies in the kitchen and bar, a bar dish machine that was not reaching the minimum chlorine sanitizer level, bare wood used as storage shelving, and holes in the kitchen and bar walls and ceiling. The business returned to an A on a follow-up inspection June 23.

How the grades work

The results show that a high point total does not guarantee a top grade. Under the state system, uncorrected priority violations can drop an establishment a full letter grade, and problems that repeat from an earlier visit can be referred to the department’s enforcement section. State law allows penalties of up to $1,000 per violation for each day an establishment remains out of compliance.

All inspection reports are open to the public under the Freedom of Information Act and are available through the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. Persis Indian Grill, Fiery Crab, and Wylie’s Eats and Drinks each returned to an A on follow-up inspections later in June. Millstone Pizza and Taphouse and Small Bar, both inspected in the final week of the month, face follow-up inspections that were still pending as June closed.
