A 40 year old man who was being held at the York County Detention Center has died following a medical emergency early Sunday morning, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.
Just before 6:30 a.m. on June 21, 2026, staff at the detention center found the inmate unconscious and not breathing. Officers called for assistance and began life saving measures immediately. Emergency medical services arrived between 10 and 15 minutes later and continued those efforts before transporting the man to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 7:16 a.m.
Sheriff Tony Breeden has requested that the State Law Enforcement Division investigate the death, in keeping with York County Sheriff’s Office policy for in custody deaths.
The man had been held at the detention center since June 18, 2026, following a revoked probation violation.
Authorities have not released the inmate’s identity. The York County Sheriff’s Office said that information, along with further details of the investigation, will not be made available until the State Law Enforcement Division completes its review and the York County Coroner’s Office notifies the man’s next of kin.
