A 63 year old Indian Land woman died Wednesday evening after she was struck by her own vehicle in an apartment parking lot near the South Carolina and North Carolina state line, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said.
The crash happened the evening of June 10 in the parking lot of the Madison Ridge Apartments, just off Highway 160 in Indian Land. The coroner’s office identified the woman as Margaret McWeeney of Indian Land.
The death is the latest reminder of how quickly a routine moment in a familiar parking lot can turn fatal in a fast growing corner of Lancaster County, where the Indian Land community continues to add residents and traffic along the Highway 160 corridor.
According to the coroner’s office, McWeeney is believed to have gotten out of her car while it was still in reverse, unaware the transmission had not been placed in park. When the vehicle began to roll backward, the coroner said McWeeney tried to get back into the car but accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake. The vehicle then accelerated in reverse, striking McWeeney and nearby vehicles.
The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office said it was investigating the crash along with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
