Deputies Investigate Fatal Drive By Shooting in Lancaster County

LANCASTER — A Lancaster man died after a shooting Sunday night on Old Camden Road, and the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information to come forward as investigators work to identify a suspect.

Deputies were dispatched to the 300 block of Old Camden Road at 9:47 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, after a report of shots fired, according to a sheriff’s office news release. They found a man lying in the driveway of a home with an apparent gunshot wound. The victim was breathing and had a pulse when deputies arrived, and the first deputies on scene provided medical aid until Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services personnel took over.

The victim was transported to a medical facility for treatment, where he later died, the sheriff’s office said. Lancaster County Coroner Karla Deese identified the victim as 23 year old Jaheim Crawford Hood. Deese said an autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

What investigators have found

Additional deputies, violent crime investigators and crime scene investigators responded to secure the scene, collect evidence and interview people believed to have knowledge of what occurred, according to the release.

Initial indications are that several people, including the victim, were outside the home when a car sped by, the sheriff’s office said. Gunshots were exchanged between the occupants of the car and those outside the home. The victim was the only person injured by gunfire, but two cars at the scene appear to have been struck.

The shooting does not appear to be random, but a suspect has not been identified or arrested, the release said. Investigators are continuing to interview witnesses and gather evidence.

A call for information

“This shooting happened in the presence of witnesses, and we need those folks and anybody else who knows anything about this case to talk with us,” Sheriff Barry Faile said in the release. “Information may be provided anonymously. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this victim.”

All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
