COLUMBIA, SC – Lieutenant Alex Clark of the York County Sheriff’s Office has been named the 2025 Governor’s County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for county agencies, recognizing his extraordinary leadership, investigative excellence, courage under pressure, and unwavering commitment to protecting the most innocent victims and serving the citizens of York County. The award was presented by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster at a ceremony in Columbia on May 19, 2026.
“South Carolina is fortunate to have the best law enforcement officers in the country. Their work is essential to keeping our communities safe and too often goes unrecognized,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “This ceremony gives us the opportunity to honor the hard work they do every day to serve the people of our state with bravery and integrity.”
Lt. Clark, who serves in the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division, Digital Forensic and Cyber Crimes Unit, was selected for the prestigious statewide honor following a year marked by significant investigative achievements involving violent offenders and crimes against children.
“Lt. Clark represents the very best of law enforcement professionalism and public service,” said Sheriff Tony Breeden. “His dedication to protecting children, his calm leadership during dangerous situations, and his commitment to justice make him exceptionally deserving of this honor. York County is safer because of his work.”
Throughout 2024 and 2025, Lt. Clark led and supervised several of the Sheriff’s Office’s most complex and sensitive investigations. His work directly contributed to the successful prosecution and lengthy incarceration of dangerous offenders who preyed upon children.
In one case, Lt. Clark oversaw an investigation that resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for an offender convicted of sexually abusing a minor over several years and later attempting to further victimize the child by distributing explicit materials at a local school. Prosecutors and the presiding judge described the crimes as among the most disturbing they had encountered in York County. Through careful case preparation, coordination with prosecutors, and a victim-centered investigative approach, Lt. Clark helped secure the maximum allowable sentence while sparing the victim from having to testify publicly.
In another major investigation, Lt. Clark’s leadership helped secure a 46-year prison sentence for an offender convicted of multiple counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and sexual exploitation of a minor. The case involved extensive digital evidence, prolonged investigative work, and a complex prosecution strategy. The successful outcome reflected the strength of the investigation and Lt. Clark’s relentless pursuit of justice for the victims.
Lt. Clark was also recognized for his courage during a violent confrontation on Sept. 18, 2025, during an in-custody interview. Investigators said a suspect suddenly lunged for the holstered firearm of a detective, creating an immediate life-threatening situation. Lt. Clark intervened without hesitation, physically restraining the suspect and preventing the weapon from being taken. His decisive actions prevented serious injury or possible loss of life.
Lieutenant Clark has nearly 21 years of service at the YCSO, characterized by professionalism, integrity, compassion for victims, and a strong commitment to public safety. The Governor’s County Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award honors law enforcement professionals throughout South Carolina who exhibit exceptional service and leadership within their agencies and communities.
