Just a year ago, Caden Glauber was dominating hitters on the diamonds of Fort Mill. Today, he is doing the same on one of college baseball’s biggest stages.
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Monday that the University of North Carolina freshman and former Catawba Ridge standout has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week. The honor follows a legendary relief performance that propelled the No. 6 Tar Heels to a 6-4 victory over Clemson in a 14-inning marathon this past Saturday.
Entering a high-stakes, tied ballgame in the bottom of the ninth inning at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the right-hander took the mound with the poise of a veteran. What followed was a masterclass in endurance and “clutch” pitching:
-
The Stat Line: Glauber threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing only five hits and three walks while striking out six.
-
The Efficiency: He threw a career-high 101 pitches, maintaining a fastball that touched 97 mph even as the game stretched into its fifth hour.
-
The Escape: In the 14th inning, with the tying run at the plate, Glauber induced a fly ball to right field to seal the win and even the series for the Tar Heels.
Glauber, an early enrollee who is technically young enough to be finishing his senior year at Catawba Ridge, has wasted no time making an impact in Chapel Hill. He is the first true freshman in the ACC to earn Pitcher of the Week honors this season and currently ranks third on the UNC staff with a 2.00 ERA.
“The kid was nails,” said one conference analyst following the performance. “To see a freshman go six high-leverage innings on the road in an atmosphere like Clemson — it’s unheard of.”
For his fans back in Fort Mill, Glauber’s success comes as no surprise. During his tenure as a Copperhead, his power arm and competitive fire were staples of the Fort Mill sports scene.
The Tar Heels return home this weekend for a top-five showdown against Georgia, where Glauber is expected to remain a critical piece of the pitching rotation.
