Several runners from York and Lancaster County schools turned in strong performances last weekend at the ASICS Carolina Distance Carnival, one of the Southeast’s premier distance track meets drawing hundreds of athletes from across the region.
The meet featured finals in the boys and girls 800 meters, mile, and 3200 meters, with competition so deep that times well under national standards did not guarantee a podium finish.
Fort Mill
Fort Mill was the most represented school from the area, placing multiple athletes across several events.
In the boys 3200 meters, the Yellow Jackets fielded a deep group. Connor Demmerle finished 39th in 9:11.92, followed by Owen Ware in 75th at 9:29.07, Finn Leckrone in 95th at 9:33.45, Hudson Haley in 100th at 9:35.34, and Ben Madej in 168th at 9:57.78.
In the boys mile, Owen Ware continued his strong showing, placing 90th with a time of 4:22.14. Jacob Audley finished 365th in 4:44.66 and Liam Doheny 330th in 4:42.72.
In the boys 800, Quinlan O’Toole turned in a 2:02.46 for 130th place.
On the girls side, Lauren Allen ran a 5:11.72 in the mile for 68th place, and Marlee Cook finished 94th in 5:16.99. In the girls 3200, Kaylee Rovenstine posted an 11:31.06 and Lauren Allen ran 11:37.12. Mia Zook competed as well, finishing in 11:58.25.

Catawba Ridge
Catawba Ridge produced some of the area’s most notable performances of the day.
Ryan Pierson had a productive meet across three events. He clocked a 4:29.02 in the boys mile for 173rd place, ran a 2:01.35 in the 800 for 106th place, and also competed in the 3200, finishing 121st in 9:42.69. Lincoln Smith ran the mile in 4:28.40 for 167th and the 3200 in 9:43.89 for 124th. Aidan Rogers finished 250th in the mile at 4:36.45 and 153rd in the 3200 at 9:52.04.
William Kowalski turned in one of the stronger local performances of the meet in the boys 800, finishing 47th overall with a time of 1:57.97. Kyler Broyles also competed in the boys 800, finishing in 2:06.52.
On the girls side, Isabella Cardozo turned in one of the top local performances of the meet, placing 26th in the girls 800 with a time of 2:16.94. Zadie Wilkerson placed 259th in the girls mile at 5:50.50 and ran 2:26.63 in the 800. Karley Johnson ran 2:31.50 in the 800.

Clover put runners on the track across multiple events.
Ella Nighbor was the top girls performer for the Blue Eagles, placing 21st in the girls mile with a time of 4:57.01 and running 10:26.58 in the girls 3200. Ava Jagielski ran the mile in 5:19.51. Kaya Best placed 215th in the girls mile at 5:41.11 and ran 2:32.16 in the 800. McKinley Johnson clocked a 5:55.08 mile.
On the boys side, Alex Bohlen ran a 4:29.64 mile for 182nd place and a 1:59.57 in the 800 for 73rd. Ethan Solomon ran a 1:58.56 in the 800 for 53rd. Wade Ward placed 207th in the 800 at 2:06.40, and Aidan Barkaway finished 118th at 2:02.02.
Chase Hensley ran a 4:42.03 mile for 320th place. Aiden Lomas finished in 2:09.97 in the 800 and 5:01.59 in the mile.

The Big Picture
The Carolina Distance Carnival drew competitors from across the Carolinas, Virginia, and beyond, including powerhouse programs such as IMG Academy and nationally prominent homeschool and independent programs. Times that would win most regular-season invitationals placed runners in the middle of the field here.
For York and Lancaster county programs, the meet served as a meaningful measuring stick heading into the heart of the spring schedule and the approach of region and state championship competition.
