Yellow Jackets Outlast Clover in Shootout Thriller; Tuesday Night Recap; Post Season Preview

In a night of high-stakes conference play, the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets found themselves locked in a defensive battle on the pitch and a tough outing on the diamond.

Clover’s Kaelin Antrim (5) looks for a steal against Fort Mill’s Gabby Giarrizzi (19) in Tuesday night’s conference matchup where both teams are seeking improved placement in the post season.

The highlight of the evening took place at Bob Jones Stadium, where the Fort Mill girls soccer team secured a gritty victory over the Clover Blue Eagles. After battling through two overtime periods to a 2-2 draw, the Yellow Jackets clinched the win in a dramatic shootout, outlasting the Eagles 4-3 in the final frame to move ahead in the conference standings.

On the softball field, it was a different story for the Yellow Jackets. Clover’s pitching proved too much for the Fort Mill bats, holding them to just one hit — a single by Izzy Zook — in a 5-0 shutout loss. Freshman pitcher Elaina Hildebrand went the distance for Fort Mill, allowing three earned runs while striking out five, but the offense struggled to find traction against the dominant Blue Eagles defense.

Meanwhile, the Fort Mill boys soccer team also faced a narrow defeat on the road, falling 1-0 in a tightly contested match at Clover.

As the spring regular season enters its final stretch, the postseason race in Region 3-5A is heating up for the three Fort Mill area schools. With the state playoffs typically beginning in late April, here are the current postseason implications for the Yellow Jackets, Falcons, and Copperheads.

Fort Mill High School

  • Girls Soccer: The dramatic shootout win against Clover (4/14) is a massive boost for their playoff seeding. Battling in the upper tier of the region, every conference point matters as they look to secure a home-field advantage for the opening round of the 5A playoffs.

  • Softball: Despite the recent loss to Clover, the Yellow Jackets remain in the hunt. However, they will likely need a strong showing in their final region matchups to avoid a difficult road path in the postseason brackets.

  • Boys Soccer: Following a narrow 1-0 loss to Clover, the boys are in a “must-win” mode for their remaining region games to stay within the top four and secure an automatic playoff berth.

Nation Ford High School

  • Softball: The Falcons are currently the team to beat in the area. Ranked as a top 10 team in Division 5A (as of late March), they are heavy favorites to secure a top seed and host multiple rounds of the playoffs. Their 9-3 win over Legion Collegiate (4/14) keeps their momentum high.

  • Baseball: Nation Ford is in a prime position after a 4-3 win over rival Catawba Ridge on Monday. This victory is a significant step toward securing the region title, which would grant them the #1 seed and a home path through the district playoffs.

Catawba Ridge High School

  • Softball: Like Nation Ford, the Copperheads are a legitimate state title contender. Their 11-0 shutout of Northwestern (4/14) solidifies their status as a postseason lock. They are likely on a collision course with Nation Ford for the top spot in the region.

  • Girls Soccer: Their 7-0 blowout of Northwestern confirms they are one of the most dangerous teams in the bracket. They have virtually locked up a high seed and will be a tough out in the 5A playoffs.

  • Baseball: The Copperheads are in a slightly more precarious position after recent losses to Nation Ford and Indian Land. They are currently fighting to maintain a top-three seed in the region to avoid the “at-large” bubble and ensure a postseason berth.

Postseason Timeline

  • Regular Season Ends: Late April

  • SCHSL Playoffs Begin: The first round for Baseball, Softball, and Soccer typically starts the week of April 27, 2026.

  • State Finals: Mid-May at neutral sites (often involving the Lakelands or Columbia area venues).
