WINTER RECAP: Fort Mill Schools Dominate Wrestling Mat as Winter Sports Season Concludes

The Fort Mill School District reinforced its reputation as a South Carolina wrestling powerhouse this winter, headlined by a historic fourth consecutive team title for Fort Mill High School and a sweep of individual state championships across the district’s three major programs. While the wrestling programs reached the podium’s highest steps, the basketball programs at Fort Mill, Nation Ford, and Catawba Ridge high schools also saw postseason action, navigating deep into the 2026 brackets.

A Wrestling Dynasty Continued

Fort Mill High School’s wrestling program reached a rare milestone in the 5A-D2 Dual Team State Championships. The Yellow Jackets defeated Lugoff-Elgin in the finals on Feb. 11 to secure their fourth straight state title, a feat that cements the program’s status as a perennial contender in South Carolina.

The momentum carried into the Individual State Championships held Feb. 20–21, where local athletes claimed four individual crowns:

  • Fort Mill: Senior Lincoln Greene took home the 150lb SCHSL State Championship.

  • Nation Ford: Senior Danny Gilstorf capped his high school career with the 132lb title.

  • Catawba Ridge: The Copperheads showcased both the present and future of the program, with freshman Carson Robertson winning the 100lb title and junior Alex Johnson dominating the 285lb heavyweight division.

Hardwood Highlights

On the basketball court, all three Fort Mill area schools qualified for the SCHSL playoffs.

The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets put together the deepest run of the local programs. After advancing through the first two rounds, the Yellow Jackets eventually fell to Riverside 64-45 in the third round of the 5A playoffs.

The Nation Ford Falcons advanced to the second round before being eliminated by a high-powered Greenville squad in an 85-46 finish. Catawba Ridge also reached the postseason, falling in a hard-fought 70-63 opening-round contest against Eastside.

In women’s basketball action, the postseason proved challenging for the district. Catawba Ridge, Fort Mill, and Nation Ford all saw their seasons end in the first round of the playoffs. Fort Mill came the closest to an upset, dropping a four-point heartbreaker to Eastside, 60-56.
